HBO Max’s new The Big Bang Theory spinoff is stepping out of the screen and onto the Comic-Con floor with its own DC comic book.
Variety reports that Stuart Fails to Save the Universe, a series set in a comic book shop, will be promoted at San Diego Comic-Con with a limited-edition comic, a Hall H panel giveaway and an immersive fan space modeled after Stuart’s store.
The comic will be available in limited quantities beginning July 23, the same day the 10-episode first season premieres on HBO Max. New episodes of the series will roll out weekly, according to Variety.
The cover art comes from DC Comics president, publisher and chief creative officer Jim Lee, with Alex Sinclair also credited on the cover. The comic adapts the show’s premiere episode, Variety reports.
Ivan Cohen adapted the comic from the teleplay by series creators Chuck Lorre, Zak Penn and Bill Prady. The interior art is by Tom Derenick, with colors by Hi-Fi.
Where fans can get the comic
Fans attending Comic-Con will have several chances to pick up a copy, while supplies last.
- The comic will be distributed at the Stuart Fails to Save the Universe panel in Hall H on July 23 at 2:15 p.m. PT.
- Copies will also be handed out at HBO Max’s Stuart fan experience from July 23 through July 26.
- DC’s booth on the convention floor, booth No. 4544, will distribute copies from July 23 through July 26.
- The comic will be available online through DC’s website starting July 29, Variety reports.
The Comic-Con push is a tidy fit for the show: Stuart Fails to Save the Universe centers on Stuart, a character tied to the comic shop world of The Big Bang Theory.
A comic shop with extra dimensions
Variety reports that the Los Angeles firm Acronym is creating a pop-up fan experience at Sparks Gallery, inside the former Sterling Hardware Building in San Diego’s Gaslamp district.
The space, called “Stuart’s Interdimensional Comic Center,” is built around Stuart’s comic book store and will recreate six universes from Season 1, according to a description from Acronym cited by Variety.
Attendees will use store membership cards to unlock scenic elements hidden throughout the space. Acronym’s description says visitors will move through an LED tunnel as a comic shop hallway shifts into “an adventure through time and space.”
The experience is also set to give fans a “secret personalized take away,” according to Acronym’s description reported by Variety.
The pop-up opens July 23 and runs through July 25. Daily hours are 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Stuart Fails to Save the Universe stars Kevin Sussman, Lauren Lapkus, Brian Posehn and John Ross Bowie. The series premieres July 23 on HBO Max.
