Johnny Depp brought the Johnny Depp Ebenezer trailer to Comic-Con in full Scrooge mode, appearing at Hall H during Collider’s Directors on Directing panel, Deadline reported.
The three-time Oscar nominee was there to promote Ebenezer, a holiday film directed by Ti West and scheduled to open November 13, according to Deadline. His Hall H appearance followed an earlier promotional turn in San Diego’s Gaslamp district, where Deadline said he also appeared in character as Scrooge.
Deadline reported that Depp entered the Hall H stage hobbling and carrying a candle. In character, he joked, “I’m speaking into the candle,” before handing it to director John Francis Daley, who was seated at the panel.
Depp’s Scrooge then addressed the Comic-Con crowd with another in-character jab: “Have you no lives? No responsibilities?”
What is the Johnny Depp Ebenezer movie?
Ebenezer is a new holiday movie built from Charles Dickens’ classic Scrooge story, Deadline reported. Nathaniel Halpern adapted the material, with Ti West directing.
The cast includes Depp, Ian McKellen, Rupert Grint, Sam Claflin and Daisy Ridley, according to Deadline. The film puts Depp in the role of Ebenezer Scrooge, the miserly figure at the center of Dickens’ Christmas tale.
Deadline described the trailer as dark, gothic and period-styled, while also noting a comic streak in the footage. The outlet said the trailer includes Depp’s Ebenezer sinking into a bed and throwing snowballs at a couple.
The trailer also nods to some of Depp’s best-known screen personas, Deadline reported, including Jack Sparrow and Edward Scissorhands, before tying those roles to his turn as Ebenezer.
Early in the footage, Depp’s character looks toward the camera and says, “It’s good to be back,” according to Deadline.
The Hall H drop gave Comic-Con a second Depp moment in one day. Deadline reported that his earlier Gaslamp appearance drew attention because he stayed in character as Scrooge while promoting the movie.
The surprise also echoed a previous Comic-Con stunt at a Collider panel. Deadline noted that Keanu Reeves appeared at Collider’s first post-Covid Comic-Con panel in 2022 to present the first teaser for Lionsgate’s John Wick: Chapter 4.
For Ebenezer, the strategy was pure Comic-Con theatre: a star in costume, a Hall H interruption, and a trailer reveal for a Christmas movie arriving in November.
