Prime Video’s Sex Criminals has added Joseph Lee and Sunita Mani in recurring roles, according to Deadline.
Lee, who earned an Emmy nomination for Netflix’s Beef, will play Detective Franklin. Mani, known for GLOW and recently seen in Netflix’s His & Hers, will play Lucy.
The pair join a cast led by Imogen Poots and John Reynolds. Deadline previously reported Pamela Adlon, BD Wong, Ayden Mayeri and Ashleigh Cummings are also aboard. Kumail Nanjiani, one of the show’s co-creators, is set to recur as well.
The Prime Video series is based on the Image Comics title created by writer Matt Fraction and artist Chip Zdarsky, which first launched in 2013. The adaptation comes from Emily V. Gordon, Nanjiani and Tze Chun, with LuckyChap and Amazon MGM Studios also behind the project.
What Sex Criminals is about
The series centers on Suze, played by Poots, who appears to be an ordinary woman until sex freezes time around her. She later meets Jon, played by Reynolds, who has the same unusual ability. According to Deadline’s description of the show, the pair use that power to rob banks.
Chun is showrunner on the eight-episode series. Gordon, Nanjiani and Dani Melia executive produce through Winter Coat Films, alongside Chun, LuckyChap’s Dani Gorin, Fraction and Zdarsky.
Nia DaCosta is directing episodes 1, 2, 7 and 8 and also executive produces, Deadline reported. Louie Hayes of LuckyChap is a producer.
Lee and Mani’s recent work
Lee’s casting follows his breakout turn opposite Ali Wong and Steven Yeun in Beef, which brought him his first Emmy nomination. He is also set to appear in Apple TV+’s sci-fi thriller Neuromancer opposite Callum Turner.
His recent television credits include Law & Order: Organized Crime, Star Trek: Picard and the KBS drama The Miracle That We Met. On the film side, Deadline lists Sony’s Searching and A24’s Materialists among his credits. Lee is represented by Gersh, Anonymous Content and Sloane, Offer, Weber and Dern.
Mani broke out as Arthie on GLOW and most recently played Priya in His & Hers, the Netflix limited series starring Tessa Thompson and Jon Bernthal. Her other television work includes Apple TV’s Government Cheese, HBO’s Scenes From a Marriage and M. Night Shyamalan’s Apple series Servant.
Her recent film credits include The Roses, opposite Olivia Colman and Benedict Cumberbatch, as well as Death of a Unicorn, A Nice Indian Boy and Apple TV’s Spirited. Mani is represented by Mosaic, UTA and Jackoway Austen Tyerman.
