Miles Morales may be headed for live action after Sony’s animated Spider-Verse story reaches its finish line.
Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige told China’s Watching Hollywood that there are plans for a live-action version of Miles, the fan-favorite Spider-Man who has led Sony’s Oscar-winning animated franchise. Feige tied the timing to Sony’s current animated series, which is due to end with Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse on June 18, 2027.
“The good news is, Sony has the Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse series, which are very popular and excellent, and Beyond the Spider-Verse is coming out next year,” Feige said, according to Watching Hollywood. “But yes, we definitely have plans [for a live-action Miles], and I think a live-action Spider-Man movie has this destiny: to add Miles sometime after the Spider-Verse series ends.”
Miles first became a big-screen lead in 2018’s Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, with Shameik Moore voicing the character. Moore returned for 2023’s Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse and is set to voice Miles again in Beyond the Spider-Verse.
The upcoming film continues after Across the Spider-Verse, with Miles stranded in another universe and being pursued while he tries to protect his family, according to Deadline.
Feige also pointed to a moment from Spider-Man: No Way Home as a hint that audiences were already watching for Miles to enter the live-action fold. In that 2021 film, Tom Holland’s Peter Parker meets the Spider-Man characters played by Andrew Garfield and Tobey Maguire after villains from their worlds cross through the multiverse.
During one scene, Jamie Foxx’s Electro says, “Somewhere there’s bound to be a Black Spider-Man.” Feige told Watching Hollywood that viewers “around the world were thrilled because they knew it might be a hint at Spider-Man Miles.”
Feige said discussions about the web-slinger’s future are already active. He told Watching Hollywood that he and producer Amy Pascal have been talking about more Spider-Man films, “regardless of agreements or contracts,” and that Pascal is already working on the plans.
According to Feige, those talks have covered “what the next two, three, four, and five Spider-Man movies might be about.”
Pascal has previously signaled that Miles is part of the live-action plan. In 2023, she told Variety that a live-action Miles Morales movie was in development, saying, “You’ll see all of it. It’s all happening.”
Before Miles swings into any live-action story, Holland is due back as Peter Parker in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The fourth solo film starring Holland’s Spider-Man is scheduled to open in theaters on July 30.
