The La La Land Venice concert is getting the full spotlight treatment: a 10th anniversary presentation of the Oscar-winning musical will be staged during the 83rd Venice International Film Festival, Deadline reported.
The event, titled La La Land in Concert, is part of the festival’s Cartier Cinema Club programming at La Biennale di Venezia. It marks a return to the place where Damien Chazelle’s film first met festival audiences a decade ago, according to Deadline.
Lionsgate and Hurwitz Concerts are collaborating on the presentation, which will pair a screening of the movie with a live performance of its music. Chazelle, who won the Academy Award for directing the film, is expected to attend, Deadline reported.
What is La La Land in Concert at Venice?
La La Land in Concert is a live-to-film event: the movie plays on screen while musicians perform the score in the venue. For this Venice edition, Oscar-winning composer Justin Hurwitz will conduct the Orchestra Regionale Filarmonia Veneta, Deadline reported.
Pianist Randy Kerber, who played on the original soundtrack recording, will join the orchestra for the performance. The event is designed to highlight the music behind the film, which won six Oscars and became a rare original movie musical to cross the half-billion-dollar mark at the global box office, according to Deadline.
The venue is Teatro La Fenice, one of Venice’s major cultural institutions. Deadline reported that the presentation is also tied to Maison Cartier’s continuing support for Fondazione Teatro la Fenice and its coming slate of opera, ballet and concert programming.
Cartier’s involvement extends beyond the film event. Deadline reported that the maison backs several efforts aimed at protecting Venice’s living heritage and supporting the city’s cultural life.
How can fans get tickets?
The concert will be free to attend, according to Deadline. Tickets are scheduled to become available Aug. 4 through the Teatro La Fenice website.
Hurwitz told Deadline that conducting La La Land in Venice, where the movie was first shown to the world 10 years ago, was a dream opportunity.
The anniversary staging brings the film back to the festival that helped launch its awards-season run. Chazelle’s musical, starring in the tradition of big-screen song-and-dance romances, went on to win Oscars including directing and original score, with Hurwitz among the night’s winners, Deadline reported.
