The new Lanterns trailer puts Sinestro in the frame and sends HBO Max’s DC series beyond its small-town murder setup, according to Deadline’s report from San Diego Comic-Con.
The footage debuted during the show’s Hall H panel, where Deadline reported that Nathan Fillion made a surprise appearance. The trailer shows the series reaching into space, while the story still centers on a case in a Nebraska town.
Lanterns follows veteran Green Lantern Hal Jordan, played by Kyle Chandler, as he trains new recruit John Stewart, played by Aaron Pierre. Deadline describes Jordan’s role as preparing Stewart for work as an intergalactic law officer.
Sinestro’s appearance is the big comic-book flare in the new footage. The report does not detail how the character fits into the season’s plot, only that Sinestro appears in the trailer.
What is Lanterns about?
Lanterns is an HBO Max DC series built around Hal Jordan and John Stewart, two characters tied to the Green Lantern corner of DC. According to Deadline, the show combines a murder investigation in Nebraska with the larger cosmic world associated with the Lanterns.
The cast listed for the series includes Kelly MacDonald, Garret Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, Ulrich Thomsen, Jasmine Cephas Jones, Sherman Augustus, J. Alphonse Nicholson, Jason Ritter, Nathan Fillion, Chris Coy and Paul Ben-Victor, alongside Chandler and Pierre.
The project comes from HBO in association with Warner Bros. Television and DC Studios. Chris Mundy, Damon Lindelof and Tom King co-wrote the pilot and are credited as co-creators, according to Deadline.
Mundy is serving as showrunner. James Hawes directed the first two episodes, while Stephen Williams, Geeta Vasant Patel and Alik Sakharov are also listed as directors.
The executive producers named for the series are Mundy, Lindelof, James Gunn, Peter Safran, King, Ron Schmidt and Hawes.
When does Lanterns premiere?
Lanterns premieres Aug. 16, according to Deadline. The series is set for HBO Max.
The show filmed at the Warner lot and in several California locations, including Barstow and the Santa Clarita area, Deadline reported.
The Comic-Con trailer gives the series a broader scale than its initial murder-mystery description suggests, with the new footage moving from Nebraska into the galaxy that defines the Green Lantern mythology. For now, HBO Max has revealed the players, the premise and the premiere date, while keeping Sinestro’s role under wraps.
