LeBron James had a stage, a microphone and Tyrese Haliburton sitting beside him Thursday at Fanatics Fest. What he did not offer was an answer about where he might play next.
James joined the Indiana Pacers guard for a live edition of the “Mind the Game” podcast, according to TMZ. The appearance arrived with NBA fans hunting for any clue about James’ future, but the Lakers star shut down that line of conversation before it could become the main event.
People who were at the taping told TMZ that Haliburton pushed James on the topic early. James did not bite, according to the report, and referred to a backstage conversation in which he had already told Haliburton he would not be discussing his next move.
That left the crowd with basketball talk, podcast banter and no headline-making declaration from one of the league’s most watched players.
Haliburton tried, LeBron held firm
TMZ reported that Haliburton made an effort to draw out an answer, but James stuck to his position. The report did not say James named a preferred team or gave any timeline for a decision.
The moment had extra juice because speculation around James has been flying in several directions. TMZ reported that earlier chatter had connected him to a possible Golden State Warriors pairing with Stephen Curry and Draymond Green.
Other possibilities have also been floated, according to TMZ, including another run with the Cleveland Cavaliers or a return to the Miami Heat. James has already played for both franchises during his NBA career, though TMZ did not report that either team had been confirmed as his choice.
Philadelphia has entered the rumor mill too. TMZ reported that some Sixers fans are convinced James is headed their way, while the Minnesota Timberwolves have also been mentioned by insiders as a team under consideration.
None of that became official on the Fanatics Fest stage.
Pacers pitch got emojis
Haliburton also said he had tried to recruit James to the Pacers, according to TMZ. That pitch apparently did not get very far.
TMZ reported that Haliburton said James responded with laughing emojis.
The exchange gave the live podcast a playful recruiting subplot, especially with Haliburton representing Indiana right next to him. Still, James did not use the moment to tease a Pacers move, name another team or knock down the other speculation in detail.
For now, the only firm development from the appearance is that James is keeping his answer to himself. Fans hoping Fanatics Fest would become the site of a new LeBron team reveal left without one, and the NBA guessing game rolls on.
