Lilly Wachowski joins The Day Before as executive producer
Variety reports Lilly Wachowski has boarded Alexandra Grey's Mars-mission short The Day Before ahead of a planned 2027 festival premiere.

Lilly Wachowski is joining The Day Before, with Variety reporting that the Matrix and Sense8 co-creator has come aboard Alexandra Grey’s indie sci-fi short as an executive producer.
Grey wrote and directed the project and also stars in it. The cast includes Matthew Law, whose credits include Nemesis and Abbott Elementary, Jamie Clayton of Sense8 and Hellraiser, and Alexander David Pleasant, also seen in Abbott Elementary.
What is The Day Before about?
The Day Before is set just before a major NASA mission and centers on Dr. Erynne Washington, played by Grey. Erynne has been chosen as the first astronaut for a landmark one-way trip to Mars, a mission that means she will not come back to Earth.
While the public marks the milestone, the story follows Erynne during her last day at home with her husband, Marcus, played by Law, and their young son, Noah, played by Pleasant. Clayton plays Caroline Shaw, a news anchor who interviews Erynne for her final televised appearance before the mission.
The short has completed filming in Los Angeles, according to Variety. It is being lined up for a festival debut in 2027.
Who is producing the sci-fi short?
Grey is producing through her company, Bishop Street Production. The producer lineup also includes Zackary Drucker, a two-time Emmy nominee whose credits include The Stroll and Transparent, along with Jonathan Olson and Ilayda Cetinkaya, a Student Academy Award-winning producer.
Wachowski is part of the executive producer team alongside Jalen Jones, Grafton Doyle and John Reyes Doyle of Equites Productions. Bamby Salcedo, president and CEO of the TransLatin@ Coalition, is also an executive producer.
Wachowski’s involvement adds a major sci-fi name to the short. She co-created The Matrix franchise and the series Sense8, both projects known for identity-driven storytelling and high-concept genre ideas.

Grey is an actor, writer and director. Her screen credits include Empire, How to Get Away with Murder, MacGyver, The Resident and The Alienist, according to Variety.

With production wrapped and festival plans ahead, The Day Before now enters its next phase with Wachowski’s name on the executive producer slate and a cast built around a final day on Earth before a one-way journey into space.
