Marvel has put its next Avengers swarm on display, releasing the first official trailer for Avengers: Doomsday ahead of the film’s December 18 theatrical release.
The trailer, posted by Marvel Entertainment, gives fans their first big look at the threat hanging over the Marvel Cinematic Universe: Robert Downey Jr.’s Doctor Doom. Deadline reports the clip positions Doom as one of the MCU’s most dangerous villains.
Patrick Stewart’s Professor Xavier sets the tone in the footage, warning, “Something’s coming, something we may not be able to deter.” He adds, “Before this day is done, we will be faced with an unthinkable decision.”
Chris Hemsworth’s Thor also appears in the trailer, saying, “We’re going to need a miracle” to stop Doom. According to Deadline, that miracle appears to include Steve Rogers, with Chris Evans returning for the first time since Avengers: Endgame in 2019.
A very crowded Marvel call sheet
The trailer pulls from several corners of Marvel’s screen universe. Deadline says the footage includes Shang-Chi, played by Simu Liu, Yelena Belova, played by Florence Pugh, and the Thunderbolts.
Also seen or listed among the returning characters are Namor, played by Tenoch Huerta, the Black Panthers, Gambit, played by Channing Tatum, the Fantastic Four and Magneto, played by Ian McKellen.
The film was announced at Comic-Con 2024 along with Avengers: Secret Wars. Deadline reports the two films marked Joe and Anthony Russo’s return to the MCU.
The Russo brothers previously directed major Marvel entries including Avengers: Endgame, the 2019 film that last featured Evans as Steve Rogers.
The X-Men and Fantastic Four join the fight
Deadline reports that a March 2025 livestream stunt revealed a cast that reaches back into the Fox Marvel era. Stewart is back as Charles Xavier, joined by Alan Cumming as Nightcrawler, Rebecca Romijn as Mystique, James Marsden as Cyclops and Kelsey Grammer as Beast.
The new Fantastic Four lineup is also part of the film. Pedro Pascal plays Reed Richards, Vanessa Kirby plays Sue Storm, Joseph Quinn plays Johnny Storm and Ebon Moss-Bachrach plays Ben Grimm, also known as The Thing.
Deadline’s cast list also includes Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson, also known as Captain America, Sebastian Stan as Bucky Barnes, also known as the Winter Soldier, Letitia Wright as Shuri, Paul Rudd as Ant-Man, Hannah John-Kamen as Ghost, Wyatt Russell as John Walker and Tom Hiddleston as Loki.
Lewis Pullman, Danny Ramirez, David Harbour and Winston Duke are also listed among the performers appearing in the film.
Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to arrive in theaters on December 18.
