Point Break gets a 4K theater run for its 35th anniversary
Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze’s 1991 action favorite returns Aug. 16 and 19 with a new restoration and a surfer’s intro.

Johnny Utah and Bodhi are heading back to theaters, this time in a new 4K restoration of Point Break timed to the film’s 35th anniversary, Variety reported.
The 1991 action film starring Keanu Reeves and Patrick Swayze will play in theaters on Aug. 16 and Aug. 19. Variety reported that the rerelease is being handled by Resurgence Media Group, Saga Arts and Fathom Entertainment.
Tickets for Point Break 35th Anniversary are on sale now online and at participating theater box offices, according to the report.
A surf legend joins the screening
The anniversary presentation will include a new introduction from surfer Matt Archbold, Variety reported. Archbold served as Swayze’s surf double on the movie and helped teach Reeves, Swayze and other cast members how to surf.
According to Variety, Archbold will also share behind-the-scenes stories from the production before the film begins.
That gives the rerelease an extra bit of surf-shop credibility for a movie that turned beach culture, undercover FBI work and adrenaline-junkie mythology into one of the most quoted action films of the early 1990s.
What Point Break is about
Directed by Kathryn Bigelow, Point Break follows an FBI investigation into a crew of bank robbers known as the Ex-Presidents, Variety reported. The group commits robberies while wearing masks of former U.S. presidents Ronald Reagan, Jimmy Carter, Richard Nixon and Lyndon Johnson.
In the film, the FBI suspects the robbers may be surfers. Young agent Johnny Utah, played by Reeves, is sent undercover at the beach to get close to the surfing community and gather information.
Utah becomes increasingly tied to the world of Bodhi, the magnetic surfer played by Swayze, and Bodhi’s thrill-seeking circle. The story puts Utah’s assignment and loyalties under pressure as he moves deeper into that scene.
The cast also includes Gary Busey, Lori Petty, John C. McGinley, James LeGros and Anthony Kiedis, according to Variety.
Fathom touts the big-screen return
Shannah Miller, vice president of marketing at Fathom Entertainment, said in a statement reported by Variety that few movies have earned a fan base as devoted as Point Break.
Miller said the restored 4K version brings Bodhi, Johnny Utah and the film’s surfing and skydiving sequences back to theaters 35 years after its original release.
