Indonesian studio Visinema is lining up Queen of Malacca for the first quarter of 2027, with founder and filmmaker Angga Dwimas Sasongko telling Variety the fantasy epic is in post-production and already drawing interest from potential overseas distributors.
Sasongko spoke during the Malaysia International Film Festival in Kuala Lumpur, where he said discussions are underway with possible partners in China, Thailand and other markets. The film has gained extra attention after Blue Finch Films came on board to handle worldwide sales, according to Variety.
Queen of Malacca is being treated as more than a one-off release. Sasongko told Variety the title is set to become Visinema’s next franchise, putting it at the center of the company’s push to build Indonesian-rooted stories that can travel across borders.
When will Queen of Malacca be released?
Sasongko is targeting a first-quarter 2027 release for Queen of Malacca, according to Variety. The film is currently in post-production, with distribution talks taking place in several international markets.
The project also marks Sasongko’s return to directing after a two-year pause. He told Variety he spent eight years developing the film’s fantasy world, which brings together Southeast Asian martial arts, supernatural elements and heavy visual effects, with inspiration drawn from regional mythology and traditions.
For readers coming fresh to the title, Queen of Malacca is described by Variety as a Southeast Asian fantasy epic. Visinema’s plan is to use it as the foundation for a broader franchise rather than limiting it to a single feature film.
What is Visinema planning after Jumbo?
Visinema’s slate is getting crowded. Variety reports that the company is preparing five films for release in 2027 and is also building an animation pipeline that stretches through 2030.
That animation plan includes a superhero action-comedy animated feature scheduled for 2028, a sequel to the family property Nussa, and a follow-up to Jumbo. Variety described Jumbo as one of Indonesia’s biggest box office hits of all time.
The studio’s strategy is built around intellectual property with local identity and international reach. Sasongko told Variety that Visinema wants partners who bring more than money to a project, including access to markets, production know-how, distribution strength and long-term strategic value.
He said that since 2018, Visinema has generally kept outside investment in its projects below 40%. The company is looking to strengthen ties across mainland China, Thailand, Vietnam and the Philippines, according to Variety.
Sasongko framed the plan as a mix of creative ambition and commercial design: stories shaped by regional culture, backed by partnerships that can help them move across Southeast Asia and beyond.
