Ralph Hemecker death news was confirmed by his family to Deadline: the director, writer, producer and showrunner died July 10 at his home in Glendale, California. A cause of death was not disclosed. He was 65.
Hemecker built a long television résumé across network, cable and genre hits, with credits on Blue Bloods, The Flash, Once Upon a Time, The X-Files and Witchblade, among many others, according to Deadline.
Who was Ralph W. Hemecker?
Ralph W. Hemecker was a filmmaker whose work stretched across directing, writing, producing and showrunning. Born June 12, 1961, he studied at Bucknell University, where Deadline reported he made short films and developed an interest in visual storytelling.
After Bucknell, Hemecker returned to New York and studied filmmaking at New York University. He began in production and post-production before moving into directing, according to Deadline.
One of his early TV jobs was on Fox’s America’s Most Wanted, where Deadline reported he directed dramatic reenactments. He also worked behind the scenes on Silk Stalkings, later returning to direct episodes of the series, and worked on Stephen J. Cannell’s Renegade.

Hemecker’s credits covered some of TV’s biggest fantasy, crime and sci-fi titles. Deadline listed his directing work on The X-Files, Millennium, Ghost Whisperer, Numb3rs, The Vampire Diaries, Nikita, V, The Flash, Once Upon a Time and Blue Bloods.
He was a regular presence on two long-running series. Deadline reported that Hemecker directed 31 episodes of Blue Bloods between 2010 and 2024, and 28 episodes of Once Upon a Time between 2012 and 2018.
His pilot work included Fox’s Roar, which starred Heath Ledger before he became widely known, as well as the pilots for Lawless and MTV’s Dead at 21, according to Deadline.
His Witchblade chapter
A major turn came in 2000, when Hemecker directed the TNT TV movie Witchblade. Deadline reported the project was adapted from the comic book series and executive produced by Dan Halsted and Oliver Stone.
The TV movie led to a Witchblade series. Hemecker served as showrunner, executive producer and writer from 2001 to 2002 during its two-season run, according to Deadline.
Hemecker also directed features and TV movies including Dead On, American Dragons, also released as Double Edge, Blade Squad, Haunting Sarah, Fatal Desire, Nora Roberts’ Angels Fall, Nora Roberts’ Midnight Bayou and Skyrunners, Deadline reported.
In 2000, he founded Mythic Films, a company created to develop feature films, television projects and commercial productions, according to Deadline.
Hemecker was predeceased by his mother. Deadline reported he is survived by his two stepdaughters, father, sister, brother, three nephews, one niece and one great-nephew. A celebration of his life will be announced later.
