Rebel Wilson’s The Deb gets digital date after court fights
Sunrise Films has set a U.S. digital release for Rebel Wilson’s musical comedy The Deb after delays tied to multiple lawsuits.

Rebel Wilson’s directorial debut The Deb finally has a new date with audiences: Sunrise Films said Monday that the musical comedy will arrive on U.S. digital platforms on August 25.
The film is due to land one day earlier in the UK through Vertigo Releasing. The release news comes with the movie’s first trailer and follows a postponed April 9 rollout amid legal clashes involving Wilson, the film’s producers and actor Charlotte MacInnes.
The Deb is set in small-town Australia and centers on Taylah Simpkins, played by Natalie Abbott. Taylah is a farm girl and high school outsider who sees the local Debutante Ball as her chance to change how people see her.
The story shifts when Taylah’s city cousin Maeve, played by MacInnes, is sent to live in the drought-hit town of Dunburn. Maeve has little patience for the ball, and the cousins’ friction eventually turns into an uneasy alliance as both face questions about identity and belonging.
Wilson also appears in the film in a supporting role. The cast includes Stevie Jean, Tara Morice, Steph Tisdell and Shane Jacobson.
Meg Washington wrote the film’s original songs. The Deb premiered in 2024 as the closing-night film at the Toronto Film Festival.
The legal fight around the film
The movie’s path to release became tangled in court after its Toronto premiere. Days after that screening, Wilson filed a lawsuit in Los Angeles against British producers Amanda Ghost and Gregor Cameron, who are spouses, and producer Vince Holden.
In that lawsuit, Wilson alleged that Ghost sexually harassed MacInnes and later worked with MacInnes to conceal what happened. Wilson also accused the producers of intimidation and of embezzling money from the film.
A judge dismissed those claims earlier this year, according to the court development cited in the release coverage.
MacInnes also filed a defamation suit against Wilson. In her case, MacInnes claimed Wilson harmed her reputation by saying she had been sexually harassed by Ghost and then colluded with Ghost to hide it.
MacInnes’ defamation case remains in litigation. A current response from Wilson to that pending suit was not included with the release announcement.
The legal battles helped push The Deb off its earlier planned release date. With the new digital rollout now set, the film is scheduled to reach viewers in late August in both the UK and the United States.
