Rick Kumazawa will recur as Gaspar in FX’s Emmy-winning Shōgun, with production already underway in Vancouver.

Rick Kumazawa is joining Shōgun season 2 as the FX drama adds another name to its growing cast, Deadline reported Thursday.
Kumazawa, whose recent TV credits include Grey’s Anatomy, You and While You Were Breeding, will appear in a recurring role. Deadline reported that he will play a character named Gaspar, though further details about the part have not been disclosed.
The casting marks the latest movement on the Emmy-winning series after months with little public news about its second season. Production on the new run began in Vancouver earlier this year, according to Deadline.
Who is Rick Kumazawa playing in Shōgun season 2?
Kumazawa is set to play Gaspar. Deadline reported only the character’s name, with no additional information about Gaspar’s story, rank or connection to the returning characters.
Kumazawa is a Japanese-American actor with recurring television credits on Grey’s Anatomy, Netflix’s You and While You Were Breeding. His screen work also includes a guest role on S.W.A.T. and appearances on Grown-ish, Veep and Animal Kingdom.
He has also worked in video games, with voice credits including Assassin’s Creed Shadows, Rise of the Ronin and WWE 2K25. Deadline reported that Kumazawa is represented by Jackson Entertainment Management and Skrzyniarz & Mallean.
Who else is in the Shōgun season 2 cast?
Deadline reported that several actors had already been announced as new additions for the second season: Asami Mizukawa, Masataka Kubota, Sho Kaneta, Takaaki Enoki, Jun Kunimura, Ren Meguro, Risei Kukihara, Ryô Satô, Seishiro Nishida, Mantaro Koichi and Takashi Yamaguchi.
The drama will also bring back key Season 1 performers. Hiroyuki Sanada and Cosmo Jarvis are returning, along with Fumi Nikaidô, Shinnosuke Abe, Hiroto Kanai, Yoriko Dôguchi, Tommy Bastow, Yuko Miyamoto, Eita Okuno and Yuka Kouri, according to Deadline.
What is Shōgun about?
Shōgun is FX’s adaptation of James Clavell’s bestselling novel. The first season followed Lord Yoshii Toranaga, played by Sanada, as he tried to survive while rivals in the Council of Regents moved against him.
The story also centered on John Blackthorne, played by Jarvis, an English pilot whose ship was found stranded near a village. Deadline recounted that Blackthorne’s strategic knowledge helped Toranaga shift the balance of power in a civil war.
The series was created by Rachel Kondo and Justin Marks and is produced by FX Productions. Kondo and Marks executive produce with Michaela Clavell, Edward L. McDonnell, Michael De Luca and Sanada.
Season 2 casting is being handled by Kei Kawamura and Laura Schiff, Deadline reported. Their work on the first season earned one of the show’s 18 Emmy wins, part of a haul that included Outstanding Drama Series, making Shōgun the first FX series to win that top drama prize.
The second season will stream on Hulu in the United States and on Disney+ internationally, and it will also air on the FX channel.
