Ryan Clark is making one point very clear about his sudden disappearance from ESPN’s “NFL Live”: according to him, the decision for him to stop working that day was made after he asked the question directly.
The former NFL player responded Wednesday to a TMZ Sports post about his exit, writing, “I wasn’t forced? ‘I ask, should I be done now?’ The answer was ‘yes.’”
Clark’s comment came after TMZ Sports reported new details about how his final appearance on the ESPN show ended Monday. According to the outlet, Clark learned during a commercial break that he was included in a round of layoffs at the network, then did not return to the broadcast.
What TMZ Sports reported happened off camera
A source with direct knowledge told TMZ Sports that ESPN initially expected to inform Clark of the decision on Tuesday. The timing changed, the source said, after ESPN learned that a report about Clark’s firing was close to being published while he was taping “NFL Live.”
According to that account, network executives chose to tell Clark during the commercial break rather than let him potentially find out through an alert on his phone while still on set.
TMZ Sports previously reported that Clark was shaken by the news and that both sides agreed it would be better for him not to go back on the show. Clark’s Wednesday clarification put a sharper edge on that account, saying that when he asked if he should be finished for the day, the answer he received was yes.
Colleagues reportedly did not know ahead of time
TMZ Sports also reported that Clark’s on-air colleagues were not warned in advance about the firing. The outlet said some viewers interpreted the panel’s reactions during Clark’s final segment as a sign they knew what was coming.
The source told TMZ Sports that was not the case. According to the outlet, the other broadcasters were reacting to Clark’s comments during the segment, not signaling that they had advance knowledge of his layoff.
The episode drew attention because Clark vanished from the program after the break, creating immediate speculation about what had happened behind the scenes. TMZ Sports later reported that his exit was tied to ESPN’s broader layoff activity.
Clark, who played in the NFL before becoming a television analyst, has now publicly pushed back on any framing that suggests he voluntarily stepped away from the broadcast after receiving the news.
