Ryan Reynolds says Deadpool is not done cutting up the big screen, even if the next round is still somewhere down the road.
Speaking during a Fanatics Fest panel over the weekend, Reynolds said there will be “eventually” another film featuring the Marvel antihero, according to Variety. He also suggested the next outing could pull from less obvious corners of Deadpool’s comic-book history.
Reynolds told moderator Nature Luvz You, in remarks shared via Hobby Nonsense, that he thinks the films have yet to use “a few really deep cuts” tied to the character. He also said some material from the comics remains untapped.
The actor pointed to work by Deadpool co-creator Fabian Nicieza and comic writer Gerry Duggan, calling Duggan a friend and praising both writers’ contributions. Reynolds said there is also “stuff upcoming” that could feed into the character’s screen future.
Marvel did not immediately respond to Variety’s request for comment.
Deadpool may not lead the next one
Reynolds has been teasing a different shape for Deadpool’s return since earlier this year. In April, he told “Sunday Today” that he had already written some material for the character’s next big-screen appearance, Variety reported.
His twist was that Deadpool might not be the center of the story. Reynolds said he had “some stuff kind of written,” but added that he did not think he would center the character again. He described Deadpool as a supporting character who works well as part of a group.
That would mark a shift after “Deadpool & Wolverine,” the 2024 film that paired Reynolds’ foul-mouthed mercenary with Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine and gave the character his first major outing inside Disney’s Marvel era.
Reynolds has also tried to cool chatter about Deadpool appearing in “Avengers: Doomsday,” though Variety noted that speculation has continued. No confirmed role for Deadpool in that film has been announced in the reporting cited.
Still an outsider
In a 2024 interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Reynolds said he would like to see Deadpool cross paths with the Avengers or the X-Men. His boundary was clear: he does not want the character to become a formal member of either team.
Reynolds told the outlet that if Deadpool becomes an Avenger or an X-Man, the character’s journey reaches its endpoint. He said Deadpool works best near those groups while remaining outside them.
He also framed the character’s outsider status as central to the joke and the pain underneath it. Reynolds said Deadpool wants to be accepted, but that acceptance would undercut the shame-deflecting humor that drives him.
For now, the next Deadpool project has no announced release date, title or plot in the available reporting. Reynolds, though, has now put one thing on the record: the Merc With the Mouth is expected back eventually.
