ABC’s revived Scrubs is changing up the call sheet before its next round at Sacred Heart.
Variety reports that Ava Bunn, who appeared in the first revival season as Dr. Sam Tosh, has been promoted to series regular for the show’s second season. X Mayo and Joel Kim Booster, who played Nurse Pippa Raymond and Dr. Kevin Park, respectively, will not be back, according to the report.
The new season is the second for the revival and the 11th overall for the Scrubs franchise. ABC has not announced, in the details reported by Variety, any replacement roles tied to Mayo and Booster’s exits.
Who is returning to Sacred Heart
The core trio remains in place. Zach Braff, Donald Faison and Sarah Chalke are all set to return again, Variety reports. The three actors also serve as executive producers on the revival.
Several familiar faces from the original run are also coming back in recurring guest star slots: Neil Flynn, John C. McGinley, Judy Reyes and Robert Maschio. Christa Miller and Phill Lewis are due to appear as guest stars.
The revival is also keeping a sizable group of newer recurring cast members in the mix. Variety reports that Vanessa Bayer, Rachel Bilson, Jacob Dudman, David Gridley, Layla Mohammadi, Amanda Morrow and Michael James Scott will appear again in recurring roles.
The season’s official description says J.D., Turk and Elliot have gone from “interns to icons” at Sacred Heart, where they now guide a younger generation of doctors while dealing with the pressures and comedy of hospital life.
A strong first season for the revival
The casting moves come after a solid return for the medical comedy. Variety, citing Nielsen data it previously reported, said the Scrubs revival ranked among the top 25 broadcast shows of the 2025-2026 television season.
Bill Lawrence, who created the original Scrubs, executive produces the revival through Doozer Productions. Jeff Ingold and Liza Katzer also executive produce through Doozer, according to Variety.
Aseem Batra is showrunner and executive producer. Mike Royce, Mathew Harawitz, Randall Keenan Winston and Michael Spiller are also executive producers. The studio behind the series is 20th Television.
The original Scrubs became known for its mix of workplace comedy, medical drama and emotional curveballs. The revival keeps the focus on Sacred Heart, now with the former interns in senior roles and a new generation working alongside them.
For Bunn, the promotion means Dr. Sam Tosh will have a bigger place in the new season’s ensemble. For Mayo and Booster, the first revival season marks the end of their run on the ABC series, according to Variety’s report.
