A Spain World Cup Prime Video docuseries is on the way before the end of the year, with four episodes built around La Roja’s title run and its second World Cup winner’s star, Variety reports.
The untitled series will premiere exclusively on Prime Video worldwide and will be available to subscribers, according to Variety. It is produced by the Real Federación Española de Fútbol and Telefónica Broadcast Services.
The documentary follows Spain’s victory at this year’s FIFA World Cup, a tournament Variety described as controversial and politically tainted. Spain beat Argentina 1-0 in New Jersey after Ferran Torres scored in extra time, sealing the championship.
When will the Spain World Cup Prime Video series be released?
Prime Video is set to release the four-part series before the end of the year, Variety reports. A precise premiere date and official title have not been announced.
The series is being pitched as an inside look at the squad rather than a highlight reel. Variety reports that it will include unseen footage and testimony from the main figures involved in Spain’s campaign.
The production tracks the 26-player group and coaching staff across 52 days, focusing on how the team came together during the tournament. According to Variety, the series will cover private moments around the squad, including camaraderie, pressure, humor and tension.
France also figures heavily in the story. Variety reports that many observers in Spain viewed France as the favorite, before Spain knocked the team out in the World Cup semifinal with a performance built around control soccer.
The series is also expected to examine the ingredients behind the win, with Prime Video promising a close view of the competitive drive and improvement that shaped the squad, according to Variety.
Why is Prime Video making another Spain football documentary?
The new World Cup series is the seventh collaboration between Prime Video and the RFEF, Variety reports. The streamer has been building a library of Spanish National Team programming aimed at fans around the world.
Prime Video’s existing La Roja titles include Luis, el sabio del éxito, about Spain’s Euro 2008 triumph and coach Luis Aragonés, and La Quinta de la quinta, which follows young players chasing a fifth Under-21 Euro title.
The catalogue also includes La fuerza del grupo, centered on Spain’s run at the 2020 UEFA European Football Championship, along with 10 años de la primera estrella, La Copa de todos and Un equipo llamado España, according to Variety.
Sports have become a larger piece of Prime Video’s lineup alongside films, series, documentaries and Amazon MGM Studios productions. Variety reports that the service carries live sports including UEFA Champions League matches and NBA games, plus sports documentaries such as Built in Birmingham: Brady & the Blues, Sven and the All or Nothing franchise, including All or Nothing: Arsenal.
