The Tamil-language drama Members of the Problematic Family is getting the spotlight slot at the 2026 Indian Film Festival of Melbourne, with Variety reporting that the film will open the festival after premiering at the Berlin Film Festival earlier this year.

The Australian premiere is set for Aug. 14 in Melbourne, one day after IFFM begins its 2026 run. The festival is scheduled for Aug. 13 to 23 and is billed as the largest showcase of Indian cinema in the Southern Hemisphere.

Director R. Gowtham and lead actor Karuththadayan are expected to attend the opening night events, according to Variety. The film will arrive in Melbourne already carrying awards heat at the festival: it is nominated in IFFM’s jury competition for best indie film and best director.

A family story built around grief

Members of the Problematic Family follows Prabha, a troubled young man whose sudden, unexplained death sends aftershocks through his relatives and the wider community, according to the film’s description reported by Variety.

The story brings together his mother, uncle and cousins during a 16-day mourning ritual. As the family gathers, old strains and tangled bonds come back into view.

The ensemble drama looks at grief as something messy and unpredictable, while tracing the pull of family and community ties in the wake of a loss.

Gowtham said the film is personal to him and deals with grief, family and the difficulties found inside communities. He also said it was an honor for the movie to open IFFM after its Berlinale premiere, calling the Melbourne festival an important international platform for Indian cinema.

The director added that he was looking forward to presenting the film to Australian audiences with its cast.

IFFM puts Tamil cinema on opening night

Festival director Mitu Bhowmick Lange said IFFM has long focused on showing the range of Indian cinema across regions and languages.

Lange described Gowtham’s film as a debut rooted in Tamil culture while also dealing with themes that travel beyond one community, including grief, relationships and the human condition, according to Variety.

The 2026 edition of IFFM will include its regular mix of film screenings, conversations and cultural programming. Variety reports the lineup will span multiple Indian languages and regional traditions.

For Members of the Problematic Family, the Melbourne opening slot gives the film another high-profile festival platform after Berlin, and puts a Tamil-language family drama at the front of IFFM’s 2026 program.
