Women Like Us Netflix casting has landed a four-name jolt: Whoopi Goldberg, Jenifer Lewis, Vanessa Williams and Vivica A. Fox are set to star in the streamer's new original comedy film, Variety reported.
The movie will be produced by Macro Film Studios, led by Charles D. King, and Higher Ground, the media company from former President Barack Obama and Michelle Obama, according to Variety.
Tasha Smith is attached to direct. Her recent credits include Bel-Air, Survival of the Thickest and Mayor of Kingstown. The film is based on an original screenplay by Ali Kinney, whose credits include Ginny & Georgia and Love Life, with writing from Tracy Oliver, known for Harlem, Girls Trip and The Blackening.
What is Women Like Us on Netflix about?
According to the film's logline reported by Variety, Women Like Us follows a recently widowed woman whose closest friends and sister take her to the Hamptons on a trip tied to what would have been her 30th wedding anniversary.
The weekend turns into more than a getaway. The story centers on grief, marriage, long-running sisterhood and the idea that old dreams can still have life in them.
Production is scheduled to start this fall in New York City, Variety reported. Netflix has not announced a release date in the report.
Who is making Women Like Us?
The film marks the first partnership between Macro Film Studios and Higher Ground, according to Variety. Macro's credits include Judas and the Black Messiah, Fences and One of Them Days. Variety described the company as a 15-time Oscar-nominated and three-time Oscar-winning studio.
Higher Ground has already worked with Netflix on multiple projects. Variety listed Leave the World Behind, American Symphony and Rustin among the company's previous Netflix titles.
The Obama-founded company also has more Netflix projects in the works, including the series All the Sinners Bleed and The Altruists, plus a mother-daughter comedy film led by Julianne Moore, according to Variety.
The cast brings together four performers with long film, television and stage résumés. Goldberg, Lewis, Williams and Fox are all named as stars of the comedy, though Variety did not report which character each actor will play.
Who represents the cast and filmmakers?
Variety reported that Goldberg is represented by WME. Lewis is represented by WME and Innovative Artists. Williams is represented by UTA and Untitled Entertainment, while Fox is represented by Innovative Artists.
Smith is represented by IAG and Rain. Kinney is represented by CAA and Artists First. Oliver is represented by CAA, Artists First and Myman, Greenspan, according to Variety.
With its Hamptons setup, a grief-tinged friendship story and four marquee names out front, Women Like Us gives Netflix another comedy built around grown women at a turning point. For now, the next concrete step is cameras rolling in New York City this fall.
