The Katherine Short home sale has put a Hollywood Hills property on the market for $1.79 million, five months after Martin Short’s daughter died there at age 42, Realtor.com reported.
The house, in Los Angeles’ Beachwood Canyon neighborhood, was listed on July 15, according to Realtor.com. The listing is held by Steven Moritz of Sotheby’s International Realty.
Katherine Short bought the home in 2014 through a trust for $1 million, property records cited by Realtor.com show. The Daily Mail first reported the new listing, according to Realtor.com.
What is inside Katherine Short's home for sale?
The 1,836-square-foot home is being marketed as a private canyon retreat with character, according to the listing cited by Realtor.com. The property includes a living room with a wood-burning fireplace and large windows, a dining room with French doors to the outside, and bathrooms with patterned wallpaper.
The primary suite takes up the full upper level, the listing says, with two walk-in closets and views into the trees. The property also includes a garage connected directly to the home.
Two extras do a lot of the heavy lifting in the listing: a detached sauna set into the grounds and a separate artist studio on the hillside. The listing describes the studio as suitable for creative work, a private office or a quiet getaway.
The home also has a backup generator, according to the listing.
What happened to Katherine Short?
Katherine Short died on Feb. 23 after what Realtor.com reported was a self-inflicted gunshot wound inside the home. She had struggled with depression and mental illness, the report said.
Realtor.com reported that Martin Short became worried when he had not heard from his daughter and asked a friend to check on her. The friend found a note on Katherine’s locked bedroom door and called police, who entered the room and found her dead, according to the report.
The Short family confirmed her death in a statement quoted by Realtor.com, saying they were devastated and asking for privacy. The family said Katherine “was beloved by all” and would be remembered for “the light and joy she brought into the world.”
What has Martin Short said about his daughter?
Martin Short later spoke about Katherine’s death during an appearance on CBS News, comparing the family’s grief to the loss of his wife, Nancy, who died of cancer in 2010 at 58.
“It’s been a nightmare for the family,” Short told CBS News, while saying the family understood mental health and cancer as diseases that can be terminal.
Short said Katherine had dealt with “extreme mental health” issues, including borderline personality disorder, and “did the best she could, until she couldn’t.” He also told CBS News he wanted her death to help bring mental illness “out of the shadows” and make it easier for people to speak directly about suicide.
Katherine was the eldest of Martin Short and Nancy Short’s three children, according to Realtor.com.
Where are Martin Short's Los Angeles homes?
Realtor.com reported that the Beachwood Canyon home is about a 40-minute drive from each of Martin Short’s Los Angeles properties.
Short has owned a Pacific Palisades home since 1987, when he bought it for $1.33 million, according to Realtor.com. That property survived the January 2025 California wildfires, which heavily affected the area.
In 2024, Short also purchased a home in Mandeville Canyon for $2.3 million, Realtor.com reported.
