Cam Young surges with 64 as Open final round heats up

Cameron Young put a 64 on the board and jumped to 9 under as the 154th Open Championship moved through its Sunday finish at Royal Birkdale Golf Club in Southport, England, according to ESPN’s live leaderboard.

The final round was still listed as in progress, but Young had already signed for a 6-under round and held the top spot on the board. ESPN’s video coverage also highlighted Young discussing what he was proud of after that closing 64.

Ryan Fox, chasing from close range, was shown at 8 under and even for his round through 15 holes. ESPN reported that Fox had put himself in the mix Saturday by shooting 62, tying the record low score in a major championship.

Sam Burns was level with Fox at 8 under on the live board, though his Sunday had moved the wrong way. ESPN listed Burns at 2 over for the round through 15 holes after he entered Sunday leading at 10 under following a third-round 65.

That left the top of the leaderboard packed and twitchy, with Young in the clubhouse and several contenders still out on the course. ESPN’s board had Scottie Scheffler, Tommy Fleetwood and Lucas Herbert all at 7 under in a tie for fourth.

Scheffler had completed his round at 3 under on the day, according to ESPN. Fleetwood was even through 16 holes, while Herbert was 1 over through 16.

Si Woo Kim, Christiaan Jarvis and Ryan Gerard were next at 6 under, according to ESPN’s leaderboard. Kim had finished at 4 under for the day, Jarvis was 1 under through 17 and Gerard was 1 over through 16.

The group at 5 under included Russell Henley, Adam Scott, Rasmus Neergaard-Petersen and Ludvig Åberg. ESPN showed Henley and Scott both finished at 4 under for the round, Neergaard-Petersen finished even and Åberg 1 over through 16.

Bryson DeChambeau, one of the players ESPN flagged as capable of making a Sunday run from 6 under, was listed at 4 under and 2 over through 17 holes. Corey Conners, Sungjae Im and Hideki Matsuyama were also at 4 under.

The tournament purse was listed by ESPN at $17.75 million. With holes still to play for several contenders, the Claret Jug chase at Royal Birkdale had turned into a tight scoreboard scramble.
