Chelsea breaks British transfer record in busy World Cup window

Chelsea have pushed the British transfer record to £117 million for Aston Villa forward Morgan Rogers, according to ESPN, topping a mark Manchester City had set only weeks earlier.

ESPN’s Sam Tighe reported that Rogers had been widely expected to join Arsenal, but Chelsea moved fast once Villa’s price became reachable for them. The 23-year-old leaves Villa after 31 goals and 29 assists in 125 matches, and joins a Chelsea attack managed by Xabi Alonso.

The record did not last long

Manchester City had agreed a £116 million deal with Nottingham Forest for Elliot Anderson during the World Cup, ESPN reported, briefly making him the most expensive British player. That fee also shaped the wider market for central midfielders, with several Premier League clubs paying up for players in that area.

Tottenham were among the busiest. ESPN reported Spurs added Marcos Senesi from Bournemouth and Andy Robertson from Liverpool on free transfers, then agreed £52 million for Brighton defender Jan Paul van Hecke.

Their midfield rebuild went even further: £85 million for West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes and £92.5 million for Newcastle’s Sandro Tonali, with Tonali’s deal potentially reaching £100 million. Spurs also sanctioned Luka Vuskovic’s move to Brighton for an initial £46 million, while Lucas Bergvall is expected to leave amid Nottingham Forest interest, according to ESPN.

Spain’s giants moved early

Barcelona began the window with a €70 million deal for Newcastle and England forward Anthony Gordon in late May, ESPN reported. The move was framed by ESPN as a sign that Barcelona had gained more room under LaLiga’s spending rules.

Real Madrid answered by signing Chelsea left back Marc Cucurella for €55 million before he won the 2026 World Cup with Spain. ESPN linked that pursuit to José Mourinho’s return as Real Madrid manager.

Madrid’s summer also included presidential election drama. ESPN reported that Enrique Riquelme claimed he had an agreement to bring Erling Haaland from Manchester City if elected, prompting threats of legal action from City. Florentino Pérez, meanwhile, promised a €150 million bid for an unnamed star if reelected.

That target turned out to be Atlético Madrid striker Julián Álvarez, according to ESPN. Real Madrid’s bid was rejected, as was Barcelona’s €100 million offer. Álvarez wants to leave, ESPN reported, while Atlético insist he will not be sold. Barcelona and Arsenal remain interested, according to the report.

Milan, United and Bayern make their plays

AC Milan made one of Serie A’s standout moves by signing Paris Saint-Germain striker Gonçalo Ramos for €74 million, ESPN reported. The Portugal forward arrives with Rúben Amorim now in charge at San Siro after his January dismissal by Manchester United.

United, meanwhile, avoided the top-end midfield fees. ESPN reported they signed Andrey Santos from Chelsea for £48 million on July 13, then triggered Youri Tielemans’ £35 million release clause at Aston Villa the next day. Villa responded by signing João Gomes from Wolves for £34 million.

Bayern Munich worked more quietly, according to ESPN, bringing in PSV Eindhoven forward Ismael Saibari for €55 million and Eintracht Frankfurt left back Nathaniel Brown for roughly the same amount.

Newcastle’s rough ride continues

Newcastle sold Gordon and Tonali for large fees, then missed out on targets. ESPN reported Liverpool beat them to Osasuna winger Víctor Muñoz after a €40 million agreement, while Aston Villa stepped in for Freiburg attacker Johan Manzambi after Newcastle had agreed a fee around £50 million.

The club did complete deals for goalkeeper Ewen Jaouen, winger Bazoumana Touré and midfielder Sean Steur. ESPN also reported persistent rumors that captain Bruno Guimarães wants to join Arsenal.

Several big names remain unresolved. ESPN reported Marcus Rashford may return to Manchester United after Barcelona declined a permanent €30 million deal, Mohamed Salah is set to leave Liverpool on a free transfer a year early, and PSG lead interest in RB Leipzig winger Yan Diomande.
