Curtis Mead’s Red Sox debut is expected Monday night in Sacramento, and CBS Sports sees Boston’s new right-handed bat as one of the sharper player-prop angles against the Athletics.
The Red Sox acquired Mead from the Nationals over the weekend in a straight one-for-one deal, sending 24-year-old left-hander Connelly Early to Washington. CBS Sports’ Matt Severance called the move a notable swap of young players, with Boston adding a bat it had been seeking as the trade deadline nears.
Mead, 25, is expected to start at second base against Oakland. According to CBS Sports, he has made 35 career starts there and only one this season, after playing mostly third base with Washington.
Boston’s infield setup helps explain the move. CBS Sports noted the Red Sox have Caleb Durbin at third and All-Star Willson Contreras at first, leaving second base as Mead’s likely landing spot for his first game with the club.
Why is Curtis Mead a Red Sox prop pick tonight?
CBS Sports listed Mead Over 1.5 total bases at +104 on DraftKings among its Red Sox-Athletics player prop picks. A total bases prop counts bases gained on hits, so Mead would need at least two bases from hits, such as a double or multiple singles.
The case starts with his 2026 production. With the Nationals this year, Mead hit .254 with a .352 on-base percentage and .500 slugging percentage, along with 17 doubles, 17 home runs and 48 RBI in 87 games, according to CBS Sports.
The matchup also helps the argument. Oakland is scheduled to start Jack Perkins, who CBS Sports listed at 2-5 with a 6.75 ERA. At home this season, Perkins has a 7.41 ERA and opponents are batting .266 against him.
Perkins has also given up five home runs across his past three starts, a span of 11.2 innings, with all three outings ending in losses, according to CBS Sports. Monday will be his first career appearance against Boston.
SportsLine’s Projection Model has Mead at 1.84 total bases, CBS Sports reported. The same model projects Perkins at 4.9 innings, and CBS Sports said the right-hander has not worked more than five innings in any 2026 start.
What changed for the Red Sox at the deadline?
Boston’s deadline posture has shifted after a 15-game winning streak, according to CBS Sports. The Red Sox are 54-50, hold the second American League wild-card spot and are listed at -235 to reach the postseason.
Early was a significant price. CBS Sports reported he is on the injured list, had gone 7-5 with a 3.44 ERA, and carried a 0.7 FanGraphs WAR that ranked 12th on the Red Sox. He is also not eligible for free agency until 2032.
Mead is under team control until 2031, according to CBS Sports. The report said he had once been a highly regarded prospect with Tampa Bay before his breakout this season with Washington.
The game setting adds another layer to the prop discussion. CBS Sports described Sutter Health Park as hitter-friendly and noted hot conditions with the wind blowing out. Mead also recently played a series there for Washington, going 5-for-11 with five runs and three doubles.
Where do the Athletics stand?
The Athletics enter at 44-60, with CBS Sports listing Boston as a -171 moneyline favorite and Oakland at +150. The total was listed at 9.5 runs.
Oakland’s deadline outlook took a hit with All-Star catcher Shea Langeliers possibly out for the rest of the season because of a torn meniscus in his right knee, according to CBS Sports.
Langeliers was batting .263 with a .332 on-base percentage and .497 slugging percentage, plus 23 homers and 51 RBI. CBS Sports reported he had also thrown out 11 runners on 35 steal attempts and that multiple teams had called the Athletics about him before the injury news.
