Jackson Koivun won the 3M Open on Sunday in Blaine, Minnesota, beating Scottie Scheffler by three shots in only his third start as a professional, according to the Associated Press.
The 21-year-old closed with a 5-under 66 at TPC Twin Cities to finish at 25-under 259, which the AP reported was a tournament record. Scheffler, the world’s top-ranked player, made his move with a 63 but could not catch Koivun.
How did Jackson Koivun win the 3M Open?
Koivun protected the lead he built with a Saturday 61, playing a bogey-free final round for the second day in a row, the AP reported. On a 97-degree afternoon, he stayed steady after entering Sunday with a three-shot advantage.
Scheffler started the day five groups ahead of Koivun and pushed himself into the chase with the low final-round charge. The leaderboard showed Scheffler finishing at 22 under after his 8-under closing round.
Koivun’s total bettered the previous 3M Open mark set by Lee Hodges, who finished at 24-under 260 in 2023, according to the AP.
A rookie win with playoff stakes
The victory came quickly for Koivun, who led Auburn to the NCAA championship last month, the AP reported. He became the fourth rookie winner of the PGA Tour season.
His first two professional starts had been a mixed bag. The AP reported that Koivun missed the cut at the John Deere Classic in Illinois and tied for 10th at the ISCO Championship in Kentucky earlier this month.
Before turning professional, Koivun had made 10 starts in tour events as an amateur, according to the AP.
The Minnesota win also came with a sharp move in the FedEx Cup race. Koivun earned $1,584,000 and climbed 124 spots to No. 70 in the standings, the AP reported. That put him in the final position above the playoff cut with two regular-season events left.
Where did Scottie Scheffler finish?
Scheffler finished second at 22 under, three behind Koivun, according to the leaderboard. The AP reported it was Scheffler’s fourth runner-up finish of the season.
His only victory this year came in his first start, at The American Express in California, according to the AP.
Hideki Matsuyama, Brian Harman, Chandler Phillips and Denny McCarthy shared third place at 20 under. The leaderboard listed Matsuyama with a final-round 65, Harman with 65, McCarthy with 66 and Phillips with 67.
