Jacob Misiorowski record watch turned into a first-inning fireworks show Sunday in Milwaukee, where the Brewers right-hander struck out the first seven Colorado Rockies hitters he faced, according to ESPN News Services.
The run set a Milwaukee franchise record for consecutive strikeouts to open a game. ESPN reported that Misiorowski, a two-time All-Star, kept rolling after the streak ended, striking out 11 of Colorado’s first 12 batters.
By the time his afternoon was done, Misiorowski had piled up 12 strikeouts across five innings. He gave up one run on one hit, threw 83 pitches and left with the Brewers ahead 4-1, according to ESPN.
What record did Jacob Misiorowski set?
Misiorowski set the Brewers record for most consecutive strikeouts to begin a game, ESPN reported. The mark covers the opening sequence of batters faced, before any hitter avoids a strikeout.
The previous Milwaukee high belonged to Quinn Priester, who opened a Sept. 18 game last year against the Los Angeles Angels by striking out six straight. The Brewers won that game 5-2, according to ESPN.
Misiorowski did not reach the major league record for strikeouts to begin a game. ESPN reported that Pablo Lopez owns that mark after striking out the first nine Atlanta Braves hitters he faced for the Miami Marlins in a 7-4 win on July 11, 2021.
How Misiorowski mowed through Colorado
ESPN reported that Misiorowski struck out Jake McCarthy, Mickey Moniak and Hunter Goodman in the first inning. Goodman’s strikeout came on a swing through a 104.3 mph fastball.
The second inning brought more of the same. TJ Rumfield, Kyle Karros and Cole Carrigg each went down on strikes, pushing Misiorowski’s opening streak to six, according to ESPN.
Willi Castro became strikeout No. 7 to begin the third. The run finally ended when Troy Johnston lifted a fly ball to center fielder Luis Lara, ESPN reported.
Misiorowski then started another burst. Edouard Julien struck out swinging to close the third, and McCarthy, Moniak and Goodman all struck out again in the fourth.
How close was Misiorowski to the bigger strikeout mark?
Misiorowski finished three short of the Brewers and MLB record for consecutive strikeouts at any point in a game, according to ESPN.
Corbin Burnes struck out 10 straight for Milwaukee in a 10-0 shutout of the Chicago Cubs on Aug. 11, 2021. ESPN also cited Tom Seaver’s 10 straight for the New York Mets against the San Diego Padres on April 22, 1970, and Aaron Nola’s 10 in a row for Philadelphia against the Mets on June 25, 2021.
Carrigg broke up Misiorowski’s bid at perfection with a two-out homer in the fifth, ESPN reported. Until that swing, Misiorowski had retired the first 14 Colorado batters.
