Lane Johnson retires NFL: Philadelphia’s longtime right tackle announced he was leaving the league immediately on Oct. 6, according to CBS Sports, ending his Eagles career two days after the club ruled him out of its game against the Los Angeles Rams for personal reasons.
Johnson said in his announcement that it was “critical” for him to focus on his mental health, CBS Sports reported. Neither the Eagles nor the available reports disclosed further details about the personal matter.
Why did Lane Johnson retire from the NFL?
Johnson’s stated reason, as reported by CBS Sports, was the need to focus on his mental health at this point. The report did not provide a diagnosis or additional explanation, and Philadelphia had not publicly detailed the reason for his absence before the retirement announcement.
The Eagles listed Johnson inactive hours before their Week 4 matchup with the Rams, which Philadelphia lost 24-20. After the game, coach Nick Sirianni said only that Johnson was handling a personal matter, according to USA Today reporting published by MarcoNews.
That absence came as a surprise inside the team. USA Today reported that left tackle Jordan Mailata learned Johnson would not play when he arrived at Lincoln Financial Field on game day.
Johnson had previously expected 2026 to be his final season
Before leaving the league, Johnson had indicated that 2026 would likely be his last NFL season rather than announcing plans to stop immediately. Reporting carried by Yahoo from NJ.com said he spoke during training camp about priorities away from football.
Johnson had also missed four training-camp days for personal reasons. When he returned, he said he had gone home to see family and that his parents were dealing with unspecified health issues, according to the NJ.com report. USA Today said it was unclear whether those circumstances were connected to his Week 4 absence.
Johnson spent his entire NFL career with Philadelphia, CBS Sports reported. The former Oklahoma standout was selected No. 4 overall in the 2013 draft and played through the Eagles’ third game of the 2026 season.
His résumé includes two Super Bowl titles, five All-Pro selections and six Pro Bowl nods, according to CBS Sports. Philadelphia now loses a veteran tackle just four games into the season, with no further explanation of the personal matter made public in the available reporting.
