Kate Feldman of CBS Sports reported that the crowded standings have left teams weighing whether they are legitimate playoff contenders or clubs being propped up by a softer first half. That uncertainty could keep trade talks active until the final minutes.
CBS Sports pointed to several big questions hanging over the deadline, including whether the Tigers would move Tarik Skubal, whether Boston’s 15-game winning streak would push the Red Sox toward buying, and how far the Mets might go if they decide to sell.
When is the 2026 MLB trade deadline?
The 2026 MLB trade deadline is scheduled for 6 p.m. on Monday, Aug. 3, according to CBS Sports. After that point, teams can no longer make the standard deadline deals that reshape rosters for the stretch run.
With the deadline still more than a week away, the completed deals so far have been a mix of roster depth, pitching moves, cash considerations, draft-related assets and international bonus pool money.

CBS Sports listed the following completed trades in its deadline tracker.
July 25: The Boston Red Sox acquired infielder Curtis Mead, while the Washington Nationals received left-hander Connelly Early.
July 25: The Philadelphia Phillies acquired outfielder Kameron Misner from the Kansas City Royals, with Kansas City receiving cash.
July 23: The Pittsburgh Pirates acquired right-hander Ron Marinaccio, while the San Diego Padres received international bonus pool money.
July 22: The Kansas City Royals acquired right-hander Nate Pearson from the Houston Astros, who received right-hander Max Martin.
July 20: The Los Angeles Dodgers acquired right-hander Seth Halvorsen from the Colorado Rockies. Colorado received outfielder Landyn Vidourek and right-hander Nick Frasso.
July 18: The Chicago Cubs acquired right-hander Aaron Civale from the Athletics, who received right-hander Aiden Moffett.
July 15: The Milwaukee Brewers acquired right-hander Lance McCullers Jr., left-hander Colton Gordon and cash from the Houston Astros. Houston received outfielder Jadyn Fielder.
July 14: The Boston Red Sox acquired outfielder Jahmai Jones from the Detroit Tigers, who received a player to be named later.
July 10: The Pittsburgh Pirates acquired infielder Jacob Gonzalez and left-hander Brandon Eisert from the Chicago White Sox. Chicago received a 2026 Competitive Balance-A Round pick and left-hander Jaden Woods.
July 10: The Minnesota Twins acquired right-hander Tommy Nance and international bonus pool money from the Toronto Blue Jays, who received catcher Ryan Sprock.
The Red Sox have already appeared twice on the tracker, adding Mead and Jones before the deadline. The Pirates have also made two listed moves, bringing in Marinaccio, Gonzalez and Eisert in separate deals.
CBS Sports said it will keep tracking each trade through the deadline, with the state of the standings expected to keep pressure on front offices deciding whether to buy, sell or wait until the clock forces a call.
