Richardson and Lyles take 100m wins at U.S. championships

Sha’Carri Richardson and Noah Lyles turned the Richardson Lyles 100m wins into the headline act at the U.S. track and field championships, with both sprinters rallying from early deficits to win Friday night in New York, according to the Associated Press.
Richardson, 26, clocked 10.77 seconds at Icahn Stadium. The AP reported she started slowly, then closed hard enough to beat training partner Kayla White by 0.13 seconds.
After the race, Richardson told Peacock she felt “phenomenal” to be in a stronger place after dealing with injuries last year, saying she was healthy “mentally, physically, emotionally” and that the result showed her work had paid off.
Lyles, the reigning Olympic champion, delivered his own late blast in the men’s race. The AP reported he was behind early before catching the field and pulling clear, finishing in 9.79 seconds to match his personal best.
Ronnie Baker, 32, placed second in the men’s 100, while Kenny Bednarek was third. Christian Coleman, Richardson’s partner, finished fourth, with Richardson watching from the grass after her own race, spikes off, according to the AP.

Richardson won the women’s 100 meters in 10.77 seconds, while Lyles won the men’s 100 meters in 9.79 seconds. The wins gave each sprinter a third national title in the 100, according to the AP.
The 100 meters is the straight-line sprint that often defines the fastest athletes at a championship meet. At a U.S. championship, it also works as a major form check for American sprinters aiming at global medals.
Richardson’s victory keeps her moving back toward the level that carried her to the 2023 world title in the 100 and a silver medal at the 2024 Paris Games. She told Peacock after the race that she was focused on remembering who she is, staying consistent and being determined to improve.
Lyles treated the win like another showpiece. After the race, the AP reported, he signed a trading card featuring his image and said he planned to give it to a “special fan.”
In a postrace interview, Lyles said winning gives him a rush and described running fast as “that feeling of flying” and “that feeling of being better than everybody in the world.”
The AP noted Lyles has had a busy stretch away from the track, too. He got married in April and recently attended a FIFA World Cup game, where he posed for pictures with Jamaican sprint great Usain Bolt.
Lyles is already looking beyond this season. The AP reported he is preparing for world championships next season and the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. After Friday’s win, he said he had been “playing around this year” and warned that he has plans to run fast next year.
Other winners in New York
Erin Marsh won the heptathlon with 6,059 points after using a strong 800-meter race to pass Timara Chapman by 38 points, according to the AP. Marsh is the sister of Philadelphia All-Star outfielder Brandon Marsh.
Garrett Scantling won the decathlon by 95 points over Kyle Garland. Euphenie Andre took the women’s triple jump title, and Tyus Wilson won the men’s high jump.
