Saquon Barkley and his family were not hurt after an attempted burglary at their home early Saturday, according to the Tredyffrin Township Police Department.
Capt. Tyler Moyer told reporters that officers were sent to the Philadelphia Eagles running back’s residence shortly after 5 a.m. ET for a report of a burglary in progress. By the time police arrived, the suspected intruders had left the area, Moyer said.
At least one suspect got inside the home while Barkley and his family were there, according to Moyer. Police said they are looking for at least two suspects.
Investigators also released an image of a white SUV they believe may be tied to the attempted break-in.
Moyer said the priority was the safety of the people inside the home. He told reporters that Barkley and his family were “unharmed” and “fine afterwards,” though “obviously unsettled as anyone would be.”
Detectives ask neighbors to check cameras
The Chester County District Attorney’s Office said Chester County detectives are helping Tredyffrin Township police with the investigation.
In a statement posted to social media, the district attorney’s office said it was grateful that the Barkley family was not injured and asked residents to look through home security footage for anything suspicious around 5 a.m.
The office asked anyone who noticed unusual activity or has video that could help investigators to contact the Tredyffrin Township Police Department immediately.
No arrests were announced in connection with the attempted burglary, and police did not identify any suspects.
Police to check possible athlete burglary links
Moyer told WCAU-TV in Philadelphia that his department plans to contact federal authorities to see whether the incident at Barkley’s home could be connected to theft groups that have targeted professional athletes.
He said investigators would examine all angles because burglaries at athletes’ homes have drawn attention in recent years.
Several high-profile players have been burglary victims in recent years, including NFL stars Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce and Joe Burrow, according to ESPN.
Federal prosecutors have charged seven men over alleged roles in burglaries at athletes’ homes, ESPN reported. One defendant has already pleaded guilty and was sentenced in June to 24 months in prison.
Barkley joined the Eagles after beginning his NFL career with the New York Giants. Police have not said whether anything was taken from his home during Saturday’s attempted burglary.
