The Seth Rollins Roman Reigns rivalry gets another pay-per-view spotlight Sunday, when Rollins challenges Reigns for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship in the Night 2 main event at SummerSlam, according to ESPN.

The match brings WWE back to one of its richest modern feuds: two former Shield partners whose careers have repeatedly crashed into each other since their developmental days.

Rollins and Reigns were once allies in The Shield with Dean Ambrose, a trio that broke onto WWE’s main roster in 2012 and quickly collected major wins and titles. Their rivalry began when Rollins turned on Reigns and Ambrose in 2014, setting off years of title clashes, betrayals and callbacks to their shared past.

ESPN reported that both men signed WWE deals in 2010 and were assigned to Florida Championship Wrestling, then WWE’s developmental system. Reigns arrived after playing defensive line at Georgia Tech and spending time in the Canadian Football League, while Rollins had already built a wrestling résumé that included a 210-day Ring of Honor world title reign.

Reigns also entered WWE with a major family name behind him. ESPN noted that he is part of the Anoaʻi wrestling family, the son of Sika of The Wild Samoans, with relatives including Afa, Yokozuna, Umaga, Rikishi, Peter Maivia, The Rock, the Usos, Solo Sikoa and Jacob Fatu.

How did The Shield break apart?

The Shield debuted at Survivor Series in 2012, where Reigns, Rollins and Ambrose interfered in a match involving CM Punk, John Cena and Ryback. ESPN reported that the group attacked Ryback and helped Punk keep the WWE Championship.

The trio’s first main-roster match came less than a month later in a Tables, Ladders and Chairs bout against Daniel Bryan, Kane and Ryback, which The Shield won. By Extreme Rules in 2013, Reigns and Rollins had won the tag team title and Ambrose had taken the United States Championship.

The split came after WWE Payback in 2014. On “Raw,” Triple H introduced what he called “Plan B,” and Rollins attacked Reigns and Ambrose with a steel chair, joining The Authority, according to ESPN’s recap.

That turn changed the race between the former teammates. Rollins won the Money in the Bank briefcase, then cashed in during the WrestleMania 31 main event between Reigns and Brock Lesnar. The match became a triple threat, and Rollins pinned Reigns after a stomp to leave with the WWE Championship.

The Shield reunited at points between 2017 and early 2019, before Ambrose left WWE after his contract expired and later went to All Elite Wrestling, according to ESPN.

The Reigns-Rollins tension flared again at the 2022 Royal Rumble, during Reigns’ championship run that ESPN said lasted 1,316 days. Rollins entered through the crowd using Shield-style imagery and beat Reigns by disqualification after Reigns refused to release a guillotine choke.

At WrestleMania 40 in 2024, ESPN reported, Reigns chose to hit Rollins with a steel chair instead of Cody Rhodes during the Night 2 main event. Rhodes then capitalized and won his first WWE world title.
