Tarik Skubal 1000 strikeouts became the big moment in Detroit on Wednesday, as Tigers fans rose to salute the left-hander during what ESPN News Services reported could be his final start with the club.
The ovation came after Skubal struck out Baltimore Orioles leadoff hitter Taylor Ward in the first inning. ESPN reported that Skubal stepped off the mound and tipped his cap to the crowd after reaching the milestone.
The Detroit Tigers also marked the moment on X, posting video of the home crowd standing for Skubal and referring to the occasion as a salute for “Tar1K.”
Skubal reached 1,000 strikeouts in his 153rd career game, according to ESPN. That made him the quickest Tigers pitcher to get there, passing Max Scherzer for the franchise mark.
ESPN reported that Skubal is the 17th pitcher in Tigers history to record 1,000 strikeouts. ESPN Research added that the only left-hander to reach the mark in fewer games was Hall of Famer Randy Johnson, who did it in 152 games.
Will Tarik Skubal be traded by the Tigers?
ESPN reported that Skubal could be moved before the MLB trade deadline, which is set for 6 p.m. ET Monday. The possibility has turned every start into a watch-the-body-language event for Tigers fans, especially with Skubal nearing free agency.
Skubal has said he wants to finish the season in Detroit and help the Tigers reach a third straight postseason, according to ESPN. The final call, though, belongs to the front office.
ESPN reported that Tigers president of baseball operations Scott Harris must weigh Detroit’s chances this season against the risk of losing Skubal without a return. Skubal can become a free agent at the end of the season, and ESPN noted that Scott Boras represents him.
Skubal entered Wednesday’s game with strong numbers since coming back from experimental elbow surgery. ESPN reported he was 4-3 with a 2.70 ERA, 65 strikeouts and 46⅔ innings since returning in six weeks.
That context made the first-inning tribute feel bigger than a normal milestone celebration. A pitcher with two defending American League Cy Young Awards, a franchise speed record and an uncertain future got a long look from the fans who may not know how many more starts they will see from him in a Tigers uniform.
Wednesday’s game also carried a sour turn for Detroit, with ESPN reporting that the Tigers blew a 7-0 lead. The details of that collapse were not included in ESPN’s report on Skubal’s milestone, but the headline paired the blown lead with the emotional reaction to the pitcher’s possible farewell.
