Eric Bieniemy son charged is the grim NFL-adjacent case out of Virginia, where authorities say the Kansas City Chiefs assistant’s 27-year-old son was arrested after his mother was found shot multiple times late Sunday.
The Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office said deputies were called to a shooting in Ashburn, Virginia, and found 57-year-old Mia Bieniemy suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. She was taken to a hospital, and the sheriff’s office said Monday that she was in stable condition.
Authorities identified the suspect as Elijah Zion Bieniemy, the son of Eric and Mia Bieniemy. The sheriff’s office said he was arrested in connection with the shooting.
What charges does Eric Bieniemy's son face?
Elijah Bieniemy has been charged with malicious wounding, use of a firearm in the commission of a felony and discharge of a firearm inside a dwelling, according to the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office.
He is being held without bond at the Loudoun County Adult Detention Center, the sheriff’s office said. The charges are allegations, and the public statements cited by authorities and the Chiefs did not include any comment from Elijah Bieniemy.
The shooting drew immediate attention because Eric Bieniemy is back with Kansas City as offensive coordinator. He was with the Chiefs earlier Sunday at practice in St. Joseph, Missouri, according to CBS News, but he was not at Monday’s workout.
The Chiefs gave a brief statement to CBS affiliate KCTV after the arrest became public.
“The club is aware of the incident involving Eric Bieniemy's family,” the team told KCTV. “Out of respect for their privacy, we won't have a comment at this time. Our thoughts and prayers are with them.”
Head coach Andy Reid was expected to speak with reporters after Monday’s practice, CBS News reported.
Who is Eric Bieniemy?
Bieniemy is the Chiefs’ offensive coordinator, a role he previously held from 2018 through 2022. During that stretch, Kansas City averaged 30.1 points per game, the best mark in the NFL, according to CBS Sports Research.
The Chiefs hired Bieniemy again after Matt Nagy left to join John Harbaugh and the New York Giants, CBS News reported.
Bieniemy spent the 2025 season with the Chicago Bears as running backs coach. Before that, he was assistant head coach and offensive coordinator at UCLA in 2024 and held the same titles with the Washington Commanders in 2023.
No additional details about what led to the shooting were included in the Loudoun County Sheriff’s Office announcement cited Monday.
