Paul Pelosi has been charged with two misdemeanors after prosecutors said he allegedly hit an unoccupied parked vehicle in Northern California and left the scene.

The Napa County District Attorney’s Office announced Friday that Pelosi, 86, the husband of Rep. Nancy Pelosi, faces a misdemeanor count tied to being involved in a collision and failing to stop and provide information. Prosecutors also charged him with making an unlawful turn.

The case stems from a July 3 crash in Napa County. In a news release, the district attorney’s office said Pelosi allegedly struck a parked vehicle that had no one inside before leaving the area.

Pelosi is scheduled to appear in court on Aug. 14, according to prosecutors.

What authorities said happened

The Napa County Sheriff’s Office said earlier this month that the crash did not appear to involve alcohol. The sheriff’s office also said Pelosi was not arrested after the collision.

Deputies later found Pelosi near the crash site in his vehicle, according to the sheriff’s office. The office said the car had sustained “significant damage” that was “consistent with the recent crash.”

The charges are misdemeanors, and the allegations have not been tested in court.

Family says apology was made

A spokesperson for the Pelosi family told NBC News the day after the crash that Pelosi had “personally apologized” to the owner of the vehicle he collided with.

The spokesperson also said Pelosi had “assured them that he would take responsibility for the damage to their vehicle.”

The same spokesperson said the former House speaker “will not be commenting further on this private matter.”

Nancy Pelosi, a California Democrat and former speaker of the House, was not alleged by authorities to have been involved in the crash.

Previous public incidents

Paul Pelosi has previously been in the public spotlight for incidents separate from the new Napa County case.

NBC News has reported that he was the victim of a physical attack at his home in 2024, when a man assaulted him with a hammer.

Pelosi also pleaded guilty to driving under the influence after a separate crash in the same area in 2022, according to NBC News. He was sentenced to five days in jail in August of that year.

The new case is now set to move to court next month, where Pelosi is expected to face the misdemeanor allegations filed by Napa County prosecutors.
