Light Flip revives the T9 keypad for a $299 anti-scroll phone
Light’s first flip phone runs a spare Android-based LightOS, ships in April 2027 and skips the usual endless app feed.

Light is bringing back the snap-shut phone with a modern anti-scroll pitch: the Light Flip, a $299 handset built for calls, messages, music and basic tools rather than a full buffet of social apps.
The New York-based company says the Light Flip is its first flip phone. It follows the company’s earlier minimalist devices, including the Light Phone III, but trades that model’s OLED touchscreen for a more old-school setup.
The Light Flip has a plastic body, a numeric T9 keypad, function buttons and a 2.8-inch display that is not touch-enabled, according to Light. For anyone who has grown used to tapping glass keyboards all day, the company is also including voice-to-text and audio messaging.
A flip phone with a stripped-back operating system
The phone runs LightOS, an Android-based system that Light describes as intentionally minimal. The interface is mostly text and uses only two colors, according to the company’s product details.
The aim is to offer everyday phone basics without building another pocket portal to video feeds and social scrolling. Light says users get access to tools such as music, messages and alarms, along with other basic apps.
That also means the Light Flip is not being pitched as a do-everything smartphone in the usual sense. The device is designed around limits, with the flip form factor adding a bit of physical ceremony to ending a call or putting the thing away.
Specs include 5G, USB-C and a headphone jack
Light’s spec sheet gives the Flip more modern hardware than its throwback shape suggests. The device is powered by a MediaTek MT8873 chip, with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage.
It also includes a 50-megapixel rear camera. Light’s product imagery notes that the camera captures 12-megapixel photos, despite the higher-resolution sensor.
The battery is listed at 1,800mAh and is replaceable, according to Light. The phone also includes Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, 5G connectivity, a USB-C port and a headphone jack.
That last detail may land well with people who still want wired audio without a dongle. It fits the rest of the Light Flip’s pitch: practical features, fewer attention traps.
Colors, price and release window
The Light Flip will be sold in six colors: Black, Navy, Red, Pink, Yellow and Light Gray.
Light lists the phone at $299. The company is also offering it at $39 per month with the Light Service plan.
Shipping is scheduled to begin in April 2027, according to Light. That gives buyers with screen-fatigue plenty of time to decide whether they are ready to swap the swipe for T9 typing again.
