The Math of Us video puts Kelsea Ballerini and Patrick Droney on a Brooklyn park bench, trading lines on a soft new duet from Droney’s album Made You Look, Rolling Stone reported.
The single arrived with Droney’s new record, which Rolling Stone said is out now. The clip was filmed in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, with much of the performance centered on a bench chosen for its view of the New York City skyline.
Rolling Stone reported that Droney directed and edited the video himself. The result keeps the focus tight: two singers, a city view, and the everyday lives passing through the park around them.
What is the Math of Us video?
The “Math of Us” video is the official visual for Patrick Droney’s duet with Kelsea Ballerini. Rolling Stone reported that it was shot in Sunset Park, Brooklyn, and features the pair singing together alongside real people Droney connected to the project.
Ballerini said in a statement that Droney sent her Made You Look several months ago. She said she listened to the album while walking the West Side Highway, then paused when “Math of Us” came on and replayed it from a bench.
According to Ballerini, the song pulled her toward the life happening around her. She described it as a piece about fear, being present, taking stock of life, and the kind of love that makes a person want the trip to keep going.
Ballerini also said she is a “superfan” of Droney’s craft and praised the heart behind his work. She said she felt honored to add her voice to the record.
Droney, in his own statement, called “Math of Us” an “unspoken conversation” he senses in ordinary rooms and moments. He said he often finds himself quietly counting and weighing what matters while trying not to reveal too much to the people he loves.
He also said he and Ballerini have long shared a Nashville connection, while this project gave them a creative stretch together in New York. Droney said the video came from the habit of paying close attention to the world around them.
Who appears in the video?
Rolling Stone reported that the video includes Droney’s longtime friends PJ and Anya, along with their two children. Droney also included Nelson and Vicky, both 80, whom he met while scouting the Sunset Park location.
Droney said he first assumed Nelson and Vicky had been together for decades, but learned they had met only the year before. He said a park bench has a way of making people feel equal, even when the details of their lives are different.
The release also sets up Droney’s next run of shows. Rolling Stone reported that his North American tour in support of Made You Look is scheduled to begin Oct. 14 in Los Angeles.
