Smart rings just got a tap on the finger: the RingConn Gen 3 is now available, bringing vibration alerts to the subscription-free wearable as Oura faces fresh competition in the tiny tracker race.
RingConn is pitching the Gen 3 as a health-focused ring without an ongoing app fee. According to RingConn, buyers pay for the device and do not need a recurring subscription to use its features, a key contrast with Oura’s model.
The launch lands in a busy week for wearable tech. Mashable reported that Garmin also announced the Cirqa, a tracker with a look similar to Whoop’s health bands, while Oura recently introduced the Oura Ring 5.
What is new in the RingConn Gen 3?
The headline addition is a vibration motor, a rare trick for a device with no screen. RingConn says the motor can buzz for health alerts, reminders to get moving and low-battery warnings.
That solves one of the obvious limits of smart rings: they can collect data quietly, but they have fewer ways to get your attention than a smartwatch. A vibration alert lets the ring notify the wearer without a display.
RingConn says the Gen 3 measures core biometric data and adds blood pressure and sleep apnea detection. Mashable noted that neither the blood pressure feature nor the sleep apnea feature is FDA-cleared.
Sizes, finishes and battery life
The RingConn Gen 3 comes in 10 sizes, from size 6 to size 16, according to the company. The five finish options are silver, gold, black, brushed silver and brushed rose gold.
RingConn claims the ring can run for up to 14 days on a charge, though Mashable reported that battery life is shorter when vibration is switched on. The ring also ships with a travel charging case, which RingConn says provides more than 150 days of battery life.
The company says the Gen 3 is waterproof up to 100 meters, making it suitable for use in water under that rating.
How does it compare with the Oura Ring 5?
RingConn’s newest ring is close in size to Oura’s latest model, based on the measurements reported by Mashable. The RingConn Gen 3 is 2.3mm thick and 6.8mm wide, while the Oura Ring 5 measures 2.28mm thick and 6.09mm wide.
Oura made the slimmer design of the Oura Ring 5 a major talking point at launch, according to Mashable. RingConn’s pitch leans more on the no-subscription setup, long claimed battery life and the new buzz-on-finger alert system.
