Samsung’s next Flip faces a pricier Razr rival
Motorola’s Razr Ultra already brings a 5,000mAh battery and 16GB RAM, while Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip 8 is expected at Unpacked on July 22.

Samsung’s next clamshell foldable is walking into a fight with a very loaded Motorola rival.
Motorola released the Razr Ultra earlier this year, while Samsung is expected to introduce the Galaxy Z Flip 8 at its Galaxy Unpacked event on July 22, according to Mashable. The two phones sit in the same flip-phone lane: compact when folded, bigger-screen Android when opened, with outer displays built for quick checks and camera previews.
Price could be Samsung’s first opening
The Razr Ultra sells for $1,499, according to Mashable. Samsung has not announced pricing for the Galaxy Z Flip 8, but the Galaxy Z Flip 7 debuted at $1,099 last year.
Mashable reports that a higher launch price for the Z Flip 8 is likely, citing rising tech costs. Even so, the Samsung model may still land below Motorola’s $1,499 Razr Ultra price.
The screens look close on paper
The Razr Ultra has a 7-inch inner display and a 4-inch outer display, according to Mashable. Leaks cited by the outlet point to a 6.9-inch internal screen and a 4.1-inch cover screen for the Z Flip 8.
That would make the two phones extremely close in display size. The bigger difference may be the body.
Mashable lists the Razr Ultra at 88.12 by 73.99 by 15.69 mm when folded, 171.48 by 73.99 by 7.19 mm when opened, and 199 grams. Samsung has not released official Z Flip 8 dimensions, but reports cited by Mashable suggest it may resemble the Z Flip 7, possibly with a slimmer build.
The Z Flip 7 measured 85.5 by 75.2 by 13.7 mm folded, 166.7 by 75.2 by 6.5 mm opened, and weighed 188 grams, according to Mashable. On last year’s numbers alone, Samsung’s flip was already lighter and smaller than Motorola’s Ultra.
Motorola has the spec-sheet muscle
The Razr Ultra carries Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite mobile platform, 16GB of RAM, 512GB of storage and a 5,000mAh battery, according to Mashable.
Rumored Z Flip 8 specs cited by Mashable include either an Exynos 2600 chip or Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5, depending on the report. The same rumors point to 12GB of RAM, 256GB or 512GB of storage, and a 4,300mAh battery.
Battery size does not decide runtime by itself, but on raw capacity Motorola has the larger cell. It also has more RAM and a higher base storage figure in Mashable’s comparison.
Cameras are a numbers game, for now
The Razr Ultra includes a 50MP wide camera, a 50MP ultrawide camera and a 50MP inner camera, according to Mashable. Reported Z Flip 8 camera specs include a 50MP wide camera, 12MP ultrawide camera and 10MP inner camera.
Those figures give Motorola the cleaner win on megapixels, but Mashable notes that camera quality cannot be judged by sensor resolution alone. Testing would be needed before the Z Flip 8 can be measured against the Razr Ultra in actual photos.
Both phones share one foldable camera trick: users can take selfies with the outer cameras while using the cover display as a live preview.
AI is part of the pitch
Both devices run Android and offer foldable software tools, including notifications and app functions on the outer screen, plus split-screen use on the inner display, according to Mashable.
The Razr Ultra supports Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and Motorola’s own Moto AI features. Samsung is expected to bring Galaxy AI tools to the Z Flip 8, following the Z Flip 7’s photo, video, call-screening, recording-summary and on-screen suggestion features.
Samsung is also set to announce new Galaxy AI features at Unpacked, according to Mashable.
