Spain’s World Cup winners marked their title with a limited tech flex: custom Oakley Meta glasses made only for the squad, according to Mashable.
The one-off edition was created for the players after the championship win, the report said. The glasses came with custom packaging and lenses carrying the FIFA World Cup Champions mark.
Fans cannot buy the exact celebratory version worn by the team, Mashable reported. The consumer model, the Meta Oakley Vanguard Smart AI Glasses, was listed in the report at $499 on Amazon.
What made Spain’s pair different
The team edition was described by Mashable as a “one-of-one” version, meaning it was produced as a special piece for the players rather than a retail drop.
Images credited to FIFA in the report showed players including Pedro Porro wearing the custom glasses. Another image identified Mikel Merino wearing the special Meta Oakley pair.
The key visual details, according to the report, were the special packaging and the FIFA World Cup Champions marking etched into the lenses.
What the retail glasses can do
Oakley Meta Vanguard is built with athletes in mind, Mashable reported, with hands-free video capture as one of the main draws.
Users can start recording by saying, “Hey Meta, take a video,” according to the report. The glasses include a 12MP ultra-wide camera that records in 3K, with stabilization designed to smooth footage during fast movement such as sprints, cuts and tackles.
The glasses can also connect with apps and devices including Strava and Garmin, Mashable reported. When linked, they can overlay performance details onto recorded content, including sprint speed, distance and heart rate.
That feature is aimed at giving athletes more context when they review training sessions or game clips, according to the report.
Built for sweat, speed and voice commands
Mashable reported that the glasses include open-ear speakers, letting players hear audio while keeping some awareness of their surroundings.
Meta AI is also built in, giving users hands-free access to information through voice commands, according to the report. The feature is designed to answer questions in real time while the wearer stays focused on the activity.
On the hardware side, Oakley Meta Vanguard uses an O Matter frame, Prizm lenses and an IP67 water-resistance rating, Mashable reported. Those specs are meant to handle sweat, weather and demanding training sessions.
Spain’s players got the collectible championship version. Everyone else, according to the report, can buy the standard Oakley Meta glasses, but without the FIFA winners’ detailing made for the team.
