The Internet’s fifth album is nearly finished, Syd says

The Internet are closing in on album five, with Syd telling Rolling Stone that the R&B group is preparing a new record for release in early 2027.

The update lands after a busy solo stretch for the band. Rolling Stone reported that Syd, Steve Lacy and drummer Chris Crispy each released solo albums on July 17, giving fans three separate projects before the group’s next chapter arrives.

Syd told Rolling Stone the Internet’s new album took time to gather speed, but eventually began coming together fast. She credited Matt Martians with keeping the project moving while other members were focused on their own releases.

According to Syd, Martians spent time at a lake house writing material while she, Lacy and Crispy worked on solo music. The setup marked a shift in the band’s usual process, which Syd described to Rolling Stone as more collective on the production side, with her often handling much of the songwriting.

This time, Syd said, Martians took a larger role with lyrics. She told Rolling Stone that some of the songs still use melodies she had already shaped, while Martians wrote words around them. She also said his own melodies brought ideas she would not have created herself, calling the result “super fire.”

The new album is also being made after a lineup change. Syd told Rolling Stone that bassist Patrick Paige II has left the group to pursue his own path as a solo artist. She said the split was difficult, but added that there is no bad blood between Paige and the band.

Syd said Paige’s departure forced the group to stop and think through how to proceed with the record. She told Rolling Stone that the change pushed the band to start finding answers and helped restart momentum around the project.

The Internet’s answer, according to Syd, includes two musicians already connected to her solo work: bassist Simba Scott and keyboardist Daniel Abraham Jr. Rolling Stone reported that both tour with Syd’s solo band and are heavily credited on her latest album, Beard.

Syd told the magazine that Scott and Abraham are also a duo, and said they appear across the new Internet album. Their addition expands the band’s sound at a moment when the group is rebuilding around a new lineup.

Rolling Stone reported that when Syd met with the magazine in late June, the band had been in New York for an interview and planned to reunite in Los Angeles to record the final two songs for the album. The group intended to spend the rest of the summer finishing the record before Syd headed to Europe for the next leg of her Beard tour at the end of August.

Syd also told Rolling Stone she has been working to draw a clearer line between her solo career and the Internet. She said the two projects are distinct, telling the magazine that booking Syd does not mean getting an Internet show, and booking the Internet does not mean getting a Syd show.
