Paramount’s big-screen Call of Duty has picked its combat zone: Modern Warfare.
Director and co-writer Peter Berg told fans Saturday that the upcoming movie will be set inside the Modern Warfare side of the blockbuster shooter franchise, Variety reported. Berg made the reveal during a “Call of Duty in Culture Panel” at Fanatics Fest in New York City.
The film is being written by Taylor Sheridan, the prolific creator and writer behind a run of Paramount projects. Plot details for the currently untitled movie remain under wraps, according to Variety.
Paramount Pictures has dated the film for June 30, 2028. The studio is making it in collaboration with Activision, the publisher behind the game series.
Why Modern Warfare is the obvious target
The Call of Duty franchise began in 2003 and has expanded to more than 30 mainline games, Variety reported. The series is now under Xbox through its purchase of Activision.
Modern Warfare became one of the franchise’s defining branches after Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare arrived in 2007. Variety noted that the game marked the first time the series moved away from its original World War II setting.
The Modern Warfare games have largely been set in the Middle East and centered on Captain John Price and Task Force 141 as they pursue terrorist Vladimir Makarov, according to Variety.
The reveal also ties neatly into Activision’s next major release. The panel was held as part of promotion for Modern Warfare 4, which is set for an October launch. Variety reported that the new game continues the storyline and includes a war between North Korea and South Korea.
A bigger Call of Duty screen plan could follow
Paramount’s Call of Duty project was first announced in September 2025 after Skydance became the new owner of Paramount, Variety reported.
At the time, sources told Variety that the immediate priority was one Call of Duty film written by Sheridan. The same report said the multiyear agreement also gives Paramount the chance to build out the game franchise across film and television.
For now, the confirmed mission is narrower: one movie, a 2028 theatrical date and a setting inside Modern Warfare, the corner of Call of Duty most closely tied to Price, Task Force 141 and Makarov.
