Helium Comedy is moving beyond the club stage with a new original content division led by veteran entertainment executive Maureen Taran, according to Deadline.

The company, described by Deadline as one of the country’s top independent comedy club operators, has launched an Original Content, Development & Production division aimed at building entertainment properties across its network of venues.

The new unit is designed as a platform for comedians, creators, producers and strategic partners. Its brief includes finding, shaping, testing and expanding new ideas through Helium’s comedy clubs, where projects can meet live audiences before growing into larger formats.

Deadline reported that the division will focus on original formats, creator-led projects, podcast-to-stage opportunities, touring properties, internal intellectual property, strategic partnerships and digital content franchises.

Taran takes the wheel

In her new role, Taran will identify new opportunities, assess concepts and build partnerships for Helium, according to the report.

Helium CEO Marc Grossman said in a statement to Deadline that the company’s move into original content follows more than 20 years of working with comedy talent.

“For more than two decades, Helium has built a reputation for discovering and supporting exceptional talent. Launching our Original Content, Development & Production Division is a natural evolution of that mission,” Grossman said.

Grossman said Helium sees its job as giving creators a place to test ideas, take risks and find audiences. He added that Taran’s background, industry relationships and creative judgment made her the right person to lead the division.

The launch comes as comedians increasingly work across live performance, podcasting, digital media and their own original programming, Deadline reported.

A résumé built around comedy

Taran joins Helium after more than 25 years in talent management, comedy festival programming, television development, original programming and live event production, according to Deadline.

Most recently, she was Vice President of Talent at Warner Bros. Discovery, where she worked on talent strategy, casting, development and talent relations across truTV, TBS and TNT.

Before that, Taran held executive roles at New Wave Entertainment, Epix and The Barry Katz Entertainment Group. Deadline reported that her work there included helping guide the careers of comedians including Dave Chappelle, Wanda Sykes, Dane Cook, Tracy Morgan, Jim Gaffigan, Jeffrey Ross and Gary Gulman.

She also served as Vice President of Programming for the Just for Laughs Comedy Festival in Montreal and later worked with the festival as a creative consultant.

Taran said in a statement to Deadline that she has spent her career working with comedians, creators and talent, with a particular focus on discovering artists and building opportunities around them.

“The entertainment business continues to evolve, but talent, audience, and creative development will always remain at the center of it,” Taran said.

She also pointed to Marc Grossman and Helium COO Brad Grossman’s understanding of live venues as places where ideas can be tested and improved. “Helium has long been where comedians build careers. Now we’re creating a place where their biggest ideas can grow, too,” she said.

Clubs, comics and 7,000 shows a year

Helium was founded in 2005 and is led by Marc Grossman as CEO and Brad Grossman as COO, according to Deadline.

The company produces more than 7,000 live performances each year. Its club family includes Helium Comedy Club, Goodnights Comedy Club, Cap City Comedy Club, Bananas Comedy Club and Stardome Comedy Club.

Alongside her television and development work, Taran is also the co-founder and producer of the annual Patrice O’Neal Comedy Benefit with Bill Burr, Deadline reported.
