Julie Andrews doc heads to Disney+ for 2027 premiere
R.J. Cutler is making a Disney+ documentary on Julie Andrews, featuring new interviews and rare archival footage.

Julie Andrews’ life story is headed to Disney+, with a new documentary on the Mary Poppins and The Sound of Music performer set to premiere in 2027, Deadline reported.
The film comes from R.J. Cutler, the documentarian behind Billie Eilish: The World’s A Little Blurry and Martha. Deadline reported that Disney+ has given the project the go-ahead.
The documentary will follow Andrews from her early years in British vaudeville through her rise as a Hollywood star. It will also feature rare archival footage described by Deadline as never before seen, along with new interviews with Andrews.
Andrews’ screen work includes Mary Poppins, The Sound of Music and The Princess Diaries. More recently, she voiced Lady Whistledown in Netflix’s Bridgerton.
Cutler calls Andrews a cultural touchstone
Cutler said the film will also look at difficult parts of Andrews’ life that may be less familiar to audiences.
“Julie Andrews is not simply a beloved performer,” Cutler said, according to Deadline. “She is a cultural touchstone, a figure woven into the fabric of how generations of people understand joy, resilience and grace.”
He added that the documentary explores “the extraordinary challenges she’s had to overcome throughout her life.” Cutler said sitting with Andrews and hearing her reflect on her life was an experience he would cherish.
Cutler also said Andrews allowed the production into what he called her “inner world,” and described her participation as open and unguarded.
The team behind the film
The documentary is being produced by This Machine, Cutler’s production company backed by Sony, Deadline reported.
Cutler will produce the film with Trevor Smith, Elise Pearlstein, Jane Cha Cutler and Jonathan Ruane. Mark Blatty is executive producer.
Cutler’s other documentary credits include The War Room and The September Issue, giving the Disney+ project a filmmaker with a long résumé in profiles of public figures and major cultural moments.
Disney+ has not yet announced a specific release date beyond the planned 2027 premiere window reported by Deadline.
