Kim Kardashian says timing, not indifference, put a glossy boat-party post on her Instagram shortly after her family shared news that Mary Jo Campbell had died.

According to TMZ, Kardashian posted a batch of vacation photos on Thursday showing herself with Khloe Kardashian and Kendall Jenner on a boat. The images included Kendall drinking tequila, along with other family vacation moments.

The post landed in a sensitive window. TMZ reported that only minutes earlier, Kris Jenner had announced on Instagram that her mother, Mary Jo Campbell, known in the family as “MJ,” had died.

That sequence set off complaints from some Kardashian followers, who questioned why celebratory vacation images were appearing so soon after the death announcement. One commenter quoted by TMZ wrote, “Didn’t your grandmama just pass? This couldn’t wait to the weekend.”

Kardashian then replied with an explanation, according to TMZ. She said the post had been scheduled several days before her grandmother’s death, and that its publication ended up coinciding with the family’s loss.

In the same response, Kardashian said she loves and misses her grandmother, according to TMZ. She also said her family would honor Campbell’s life in the coming days.

Kardashian later posted a separate Instagram carousel featuring photos of herself with Campbell over the years, TMZ reported.

A family figure fans knew as MJ

Campbell was Kris Jenner’s mother and a familiar presence to viewers who followed the Kardashian-Jenner family. TMZ identified her as Mary Jo, nicknamed “MJ,” and reported in related coverage that she was 91.

The flap centered less on the vacation itself than on the order in which followers saw the posts: first Kris Jenner’s announcement, then Kim Kardashian’s bright boat shots with her sisters. Kardashian’s explanation put the focus on Instagram scheduling, saying the post had been set up before the family bereavement.

No further details about Campbell’s death were included in TMZ’s report on Kardashian’s response.

The Kardashian-Jenner family has long used Instagram as its main public bulletin board, mixing business announcements, vacation photos and family tributes in the same feeds. This time, Kardashian’s scheduled post collided with a mourning message, and followers noticed fast.

Kardashian’s follow-up tribute shifted the tone, with the later carousel focused on family photos with Campbell rather than the vacation images that prompted the backlash.
