Ransom Canyon season 2 ending sets up Ellie, Yancy and Kai trouble

Spoilers ahead for Ransom Canyon Season 2, now streaming on Netflix. The Ransom Canyon season 2 ending was reshaped by Marianly Tejada’s real-life pregnancy, showrunner April Blair told Deadline, turning Ellie Estevez and Yancy Grey’s romance into a much higher-stakes mess.

Blair said she learned Tejada was pregnant after Netflix renewed the Western romance for Season 2. The writers initially planned a heavier love-triangle story involving Yancy, Ellie and Yancy’s ex-wife Sidney, played by Heidi Grace Engerman, but the pregnancy forced the team to rebuild the season quickly.

Ransom Canyon is Netflix’s Western romance series about tangled relationships, ranch politics and old secrets in a Texas town. Season 2 puts Yancy, played by Jack Schumacher, at the center of a con that starts as a way to get Sidney out of his life and ends by blowing up his future with Ellie.

What happened in the Ransom Canyon season 2 ending?

According to Blair’s Deadline interview, Yancy and Sidney’s plan begins with the land Yancy inherited from Cap Fuller, revealed earlier as his father. The land appears worthless, and Yancy sees a chance to use it in one last grift with Sidney, targeting former Senator Sam Kirkland, played by Brett Cullen.

The scheme is meant to trick Sam into buying the property for far more than it is worth. Ellie becomes part of the setup because Sam knows her, and the tension around Ellie’s pregnancy and Sidney’s presence helps sell the story.

Blair said Yancy changes course because Ellie pushes him toward doing the right thing. With help from Staten Kirkland, played by Josh Duhamel, the con is turned back on Sidney, allowing Yancy to protect Sam and get Sidney to sign divorce papers.

Sidney discovers she has been played after seeing Sam, Kai Flores, Staten and Ellie celebrating at the Thomas Rhett and Jordan Davis concert. She then goes to Ellie and Yancy’s home, where she frightens pregnant Ellie, who falls from the porch and goes into early labor.

Ellie and her baby daughter, Isabella, survive, but the scare changes Ellie’s view of Yancy’s past. After leaving the hospital, Ellie returns home, where Kai, played by Justin Johnson Cortez, is waiting on the porch as protection.

Blair told Deadline that the porch scene between Kai and Yancy is the start of the next story. Ellie asks Yancy to leave because she fears more danger from his old life could hurt their child.

Is Ransom Canyon getting a season 3?

Netflix has not officially renewed Ransom Canyon for Season 3, according to Deadline. Blair said a writers’ room exists for a possible next installment, and she wants a shorter time jump than the six-month gap between Seasons 1 and 2 so the show can deal with the immediate fallout.

Several threads are already waiting. Blair said Yancy’s next goal would be to win back his family while also trying to solve the mystery of what is under Cap’s land, possibly oil or something else. She also said Sidney could remain a threat in Ellie’s mind and may appear again.

Blair described Staten and Quinn O’Grady, played by Minka Kelly, as solid after Season 2 brings them together. She told Deadline future drama for them would come from building a life together rather than splitting them up again.

For the younger triangle, Blair said Lucas and Lauren may be the long-term pairing in her mind, although Lucas still has growing up to do after the fallout involving Lauren and Kit. Deadline also reported that Casey W. Johnson’s Kit would return in a potential Season 3 after becoming a series regular for Season 2.

Blair also named more possible returns and expansions, including Steve Howey’s Levi, Bridget Regan’s Mary Lou and more family stories around Lucas, Kit and Staten. For now, the biggest cliffhanger is clear: Ellie has a baby, Yancy has a past he cannot shake and Kai is standing right there on the porch.
