An unnamed Secret Service agent has been placed on administrative leave after allegedly giving reporters information about Vice President JD Vance’s travel habits, CNN reported.
According to CNN, the leave is pending the outcome of an internal review by federal investigators into a suspected leak to MS Now correspondents. CNN did not identify the agent.
The review centers on information that allegedly fed a July 15 MS Now story about Vance’s security detail, CNN reported. That story said some members of the detail were frustrated about being assigned to cover the vice president’s personal travel schedule and described the work as a burden.
MS Now’s report also included specific details about Vance’s travel plans, according to CNN. One detail cited in the coverage was that Vance was set to use a Marine Corps helicopter to take his son to a golf lesson, though that flight was later canceled.
Officials angry over operational details
CNN reported that the MS Now story angered senior officials at the Secret Service, the FBI and the White House because it included operational information about the vice president’s movements.
The Secret Service routinely handles protection for the vice president and other top officials, but CNN’s report focused on the alleged disclosure of travel information and the internal response to it.
The agent’s administrative leave does not, by itself, establish wrongdoing. CNN reported that the internal review remains pending.
TMZ reported that it contacted the Secret Service for comment and had not received a response.
