Jacoby Brissett training camp drama is cooling down before it can boil over: Arizona Cardinals coach Mike LaFleur said Thursday that the quarterback will take part in the first practice of camp while contract talks continue.
CBS Sports reported that Brissett had stayed out of most of the Cardinals’ offseason program while seeking an extension. He later reported for mandatory minicamp, but did not participate in practices, a move commonly described as a hold-in because the player is present with the team but not practicing.
Will Jacoby Brissett practice at Cardinals training camp?
Yes. LaFleur said Brissett will practice on the first day of training camp, according to CBS Sports, even though the Cardinals and Brissett’s side have not reached a new contract agreement.
Asked about the state of negotiations, LaFleur said the talks were “still ongoing” and added, “It’s been productive between us and his team.”
The decision removes one immediate headache for Arizona as camp opens. Brissett’s status had been worth watching because he is trying to turn a bigger role into a bigger deal after the Cardinals moved on from Kyler Murray.
CBS Sports reported that Arizona released Murray and did not add another starting-level quarterback in free agency. That left Brissett as the leading option in a quarterback room that also includes Gardner Minshew and rookie Carson Beck, a third-round pick.
Brissett’s current contract is a two-year deal worth $12.5 million, according to CBS Sports. The report said that average annual value ranks 32nd among quarterbacks and puts him behind multiple backups in scheduled pay.
Why Brissett wants a new Cardinals deal
Brissett is seeking an extension after moving from backup to projected top option in Arizona’s quarterback group, according to CBS Sports. He started 12 games in 2025 while Murray was out with a severe mid-foot sprain.
The Cardinals have not formally named him the starter, which CBS Sports noted could affect his leverage in talks. When LaFleur was asked Thursday whether the job was open or belonged to Brissett, he did not give a direct label.
“I’d describe it as Practice 1 on July 23,” LaFleur said.
Minshew gives Arizona another experienced option. CBS Sports noted that he has 47 career starts across seven seasons with five teams and has been serviceable at points in his career.
Beck also looms as a longer-term question after the Cardinals used a third-round pick on him. CBS Sports reported that Arizona could choose to evaluate the rookie if the team falls out of the playoff race.
Brissett, though, has a statistical case. CBS Sports reported that although he went 1-11 as a starter last season, the team’s defensive issues carried much of the blame. Over the final nine weeks of the regular season, Brissett ranked first in the NFL in completions, tied for third in passing touchdowns and third in total passing yards.
For now, the contract file stays open, but the practice-field question has an answer. Brissett is expected to be in uniform and working when Cardinals camp begins.
