John Meredith Texas reclassifies is the recruiting jolt in Austin this week: the five-star cornerback is moving into the Class of 2026 and will enroll at Texas this fall, 247Sports' Mike Roach reported.
Texas coach Steve Sarkisian confirmed Meredith's arrival Thursday while speaking at SEC media days, according to CBS Sports. The move gets one of the country's top defensive back prospects to campus a year earlier than expected.
Meredith had been rated by 247Sports as the No. 4 overall player, No. 1 cornerback and No. 1 player in Texas in the Class of 2027. He committed to the Longhorns on June 19 after drawing attention from many of the biggest programs in college football, according to CBS Sports.
Why is John Meredith III reclassifying to Texas?
Meredith's timeline changed after a high school transfer issue in Texas. He spent his first three high school seasons at Euless Trinity in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, then enrolled at North Crowley in January before what would have been his senior season, citing a recent move, according to CBS Sports.
On July 8, the UIL State Executive Committee ruled that Meredith's transfer was made for athletic reasons and declared him ineligible to play varsity sports at North Crowley, CBS Sports reported. Rather than return to Trinity, Meredith chose to reclassify and head to Texas.
Reclassifying means a recruit changes his graduation class, allowing him to start college earlier than originally planned if academic and eligibility requirements are met. In Meredith's case, it shifts him from the 2027 recruiting cycle into 2026 and puts him in the Longhorns' program this fall.
What does John Meredith III reclassifying mean for Texas?
The early arrival gives Texas another premium defensive back in a cornerback room that already has starters Kobe Black and transfer Bo Mascoe in place, according to CBS Sports. Meredith is expected to begin in a reserve role, though CBS Sports reported that Texas could still use him for meaningful snaps as a true freshman.
There is room for opportunity behind the projected starters. CBS Sports noted that the Longhorns do not have much proven experience elsewhere at cornerback as Will Muschamp begins his first season as defensive coordinator.
Meredith is listed by 247Sports at 6-foot-2.5 and 187 pounds. CBS Sports described him as 6-foot-3 and 187 pounds while calling him one of the more dynamic cornerback prospects in recent cycles.
247Sports director of scouting Andrew Ivins wrote that Meredith is an advanced cover corner suited to the current game, citing his length, reaction time and recovery speed. Ivins projected him as a potential top cornerback for a College Football Playoff contender who can limit one side of the field.
Meredith has not yet been evaluated as a 2026 prospect, according to CBS Sports. If his standing carries over, he could join athlete Jermaine Bishop among the five-star names at the top of a Texas recruiting class CBS Sports described as top three.
