LeBron James free agency has turned into a late-July waiting game with real money and real league business hanging on one decision. CBS Sports reported that James effectively hit the open market on June 30, when news broke that he would not return to the Los Angeles Lakers, and he has still not announced his next team.
The delay has kept the NBA in the daily sports churn during a stretch that often tilts toward football. It has also created a rare spectacle: prediction markets are piling up wagers while the league waits to lock in its 2026-27 schedule.
Where will LeBron James sign?
No team has been announced, but bettors have been moving hard. According to Kalshi figures cited by CBS Sports, more than $210 million has been wagered on James’ next NBA team. Polymarket’s total was just under $40 million and rising.
The Miami Heat became the center of the betting frenzy after their official YouTube channel accidentally showed a scheduled video for a James introductory press conference dated July 27, according to CBS Sports. The Heat later called the post a mistake.
Before that video spread online, Kalshi had the Cleveland Cavaliers leading with 38% of bets and the Heat next at 36%, CBS Sports reported. Afterward, Miami jumped to 49% while Cleveland fell to 26%. Golden State, which was listed at 46% at the start of July, had dropped to 17%.
The betting has stretched well beyond the team market. CBS Sports reported that users can also wager on James’ next conference, contract value, announcement date and even who will break the news. The Eastern Conference was listed at 82%, while James announcing the decision himself had 35% of bets, ahead of Klutch Sports Group at 28% and ESPN’s Shams Charania at 25%.
Why is Adam Silver waiting on LeBron?
NBA commissioner Adam Silver said at Fanatics Fest in New York that James’ decision affects how the league builds its showcase schedule. Silver said teams and networks were calling because they wanted dates locked in, adding that James’ destination would shape opening week and Christmas Day plans.
The scheduling pressure is tied to the NBA’s $76 billion media deal with Disney, NBC and Amazon, now entering its second season, according to CBS Sports. Those networks split the league’s biggest windows, and James remains one of the sport’s most bankable national TV draws.
James has played 20 Christmas Day games, including 19 in a row, CBS Sports noted. Wherever he lands could immediately change which teams are placed in the holiday showcase and other national broadcasts.
Rich Paul’s podcast gets the spotlight
James has made limited public appearances during the wait, but his agent, Rich Paul, has been a central voice through his “Game Over” podcast. CBS Sports reported that Paul drew attention on July 3 by showing a whiteboard weighing potential destinations.
Paul has said James is “not going to be rushed,” according to CBS Sports. He has also offered clues that fans and media have seized on, including that the 76ers “have our attention” and that the choice will not be based on money.
The delay has different stakes for the teams involved. CBS Sports described Miami as better protected after landing Giannis Antetokounmpo, while Philadelphia has already added Jaylen Brown, Dean Wade and Anfernee Simons. Minnesota traded for LaMelo Ball but still has a frontcourt need after losing Julius Randle and Naz Reid.
Cleveland and Golden State appear more exposed. CBS Sports reported that the Cavaliers kept room open with LeBron James and James Harden in mind after Harden opted out of a $42.3 million contract, while the Warriors have not added a player beyond draft picks. Until James decides, the league, the markets and several anxious front offices remain stuck on his clock.
