Detroit after-hours shooting investigators say three men were killed and four other people were wounded Sunday morning at a location on the city’s west side near Prest Street and Eaton Avenue.
Detroit Police Chief Todd Bettison said officers were called at about 7:21 a.m. and found the three men with fatal wounds. The victims have not been publicly identified, CBS News reported.
What do police know about the Detroit after-hours shooting?
Bettison said a fight or altercation preceded the gunfire, according to CBS News, WXYZ and the Detroit Free Press. Police have not publicly detailed what started that altercation.
The four surviving victims, two men and two women, were taken privately to a hospital with injuries police said were not life-threatening. The men who died were 30 or older, Bettison said. WXYZ reported the injured people were in their 20s and 30s.
Police described the site as an after-hours location. Bettison compared it to a strip club or a venue with dancing-type activity, according to the Detroit Free Press and FOX 2 Detroit. That is police’s characterization of the location, rather than an independent determination of its operation.
Police say they have leads, but no suspect has been identified
Bettison said detectives had leads and were working to identify the people responsible. The supplied reports did not identify a suspect or report an arrest.
The chief also said police did not believe there was an ongoing danger to the public. Michigan State Police responded at the scene as well, WXYZ reported.
The Prest Street address had received seven police calls for service since the beginning of the year and was already under investigation, Bettison said. Those calls are background information and police have not said they were connected to Sunday’s shooting.
Mayor Mary Sheffield said the city would continue its enforcement against illegal after-hours operations in homes and businesses. She also said the city’s Office of Neighborhood and Community Safety would offer services to residents and families affected by the shooting, according to WXYZ.
